National Geographic Blog Reports on Lobster Cannibalism

National Geographic has posted a blog about the recent discovery by graduate student Noah Oppenheim and his adviser Richard Wahle, a UMaine School of Marine Sciences research associate professor, that lobsters will cannibalize one another in the wild. The blog was submitted by Rhian Waller, a UMaine School of Marine Sciences research assistant professor and a National Geographic Explorer studying deep-sea corals in northern Patagonian fjords in Chile with funding from National Geographic. The blog includes a link to a Portland Press Herald video showing adult lobsters attacking a tethered younger one. The website redOrbit.com also carried a report on the findings.
