National Food Writer to Speak on Decline of the Tomato

Author and award-winning national food writer Barry Estabrook will give a free public presentation on how modern industrial agriculture “has ruined the tomato in all ways — gastronomic, environmental and in terms of labor abuse” at 2:15 p.m., Friday, Dec. 7, in 100 Corbett Business Building. The talk is part of the seminar series of the UMaine Ecology and Environmental Sciences program and the Department of Plant, Soil, and Environmental Sciences. Estabrook is a two-time James Beard Award-winning journalist and author of “Tomatoland: How Modern Industrial Agriculture Destroyed Our Most Alluring Fruit.” His writing has been anthologized in The Best American Food Writing.
