Newspaper Features Food Science Program Growth

Several University of Maine Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition faculty members and students were interviewed for a Portland Press Herald article about the popularity of UMaine’s food science and nutrition programs, in which enrollment has been growing at a time when numbers are down in other disciplines. Graduate student Brianna Hughes said one reason is the active research the department engages in to aid private sector entities. Food science professor Mary Ellen Camire said many students want to be proactive about promoting health as opposed to treating disease. Jimmy Jung, vice president for enrollment management, who also was interviewed, said the department has 190 undergraduates and 40 graduate students this year, up substantially from the previous two years.
