UMaine Extension’s Moran Comments on Poor Apple Crop

The Bangor Daily News interviewed University of Maine Cooperative Extension tree fruit specialist Renae Moran for a report on this year’s poor apple crops. She said the erratic pre-season weather — an abnormally warm spring and a late killing frost — has reduced the yield. Moran estimated the harvest will be about 700,000 bushels statewide and that apples are ripening several weeks early. Changing regional climates will not bode well for future crops, Moran added, if orchards are threatened by early blooms and late frosts.
