UMaine Presenting California Proposition 8 Trial Play ‘8’

The University of Maine School of Performing Arts, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact, is offering on Wednesday, Sept. 26 a student reading of “8,” the Broadway play chronicling California’s Federal District Court trial Perry v. Schwarzenegger, now Perry v. Brown, challenging the state’s Proposition 8, a constitutional provision denying gay and lesbians the ability to marry. Written by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, a founding member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER) and author of screenplays for “Milk” and “J. Edgar,” “8” is based on trial transcripts, firsthand courtroom observations and interviews with plaintiffs and their families. UMaine senior Garrett Rollins is directing the free performance, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Minsky Recital Hall, Class of 1944 Hall. More information about the play is available on the “8” website.
