Research Projects - Maine Cancer GIS

PIs: Kate Beard, Carol Bult  (Jackson Laboratories)

Project Summary:

This project developed a geographic database to support research on the relationships of cancer and the environment in Maine.  The Maine Cancer GIS integrates geographic and demographic data with information about cancer incidence and mortality statistics and environmental variables for Maine. The Maine Cancer GIS captures temporal and spatial extents of environmental contaminants, provides infrastructure for examining spatial and temporal patterns in cancer incidence and mortality, supports detection of clusters of lung cancer in space and time, and provides essential infrastructure for long term disease surveillance.
