Student Organizations

The goal for Diversity at UMaine is for it  to become a way of life within our campus environment. Below are just some of the student run organizations that strive to make this goal a reality. To contact any of these groups, visit Room 312 on the Memorial Union or call 207.581.1428 

Student Heritage Alliance Council

SHAC is the hub for all multicultural group collaborations; we promote, partake, and motivate all member-group events and activities. SHAC culminates all student heritages, promoting what is common, and celebrating what is different.

Male Athletes Against Violence

MAAV is an effort to involve men so that we can begin to understand that violence is very much a “man’s issue.” This project was founded in the Fall 2004 by Dr. Sandra L. Caron, Professor of Family Relations/Human Sexuality and is modeled after her nationally recognized peer education program, Athletes for Sexual Responsibility

African Student Association

AFSA is a unique group of students with African heritage who meet weekly to socialize and plan events around campus.  To date they have organized several cultural events having  also attended conferences around the US, including Harvard University.

Black Student Union

The Black Student Union works to bring about a greater awareness of black culture and black presence at the university of Maine by enhancing the social and intellectual participation of black students within the university and community at large.

Latino American Student organization

LASO exists to provide a provide Umaine studetns with a unique cultural experience through a large array of activities that help foster awareness of issues that impact all individuals of Latin American descent.

Asian Student Association       

A multicultural organization whose goal is the promotion of Diversity at the UMaine campus as well as the local community. This organization is open to all students, regardless of background, who all share a common interest in Asian culture and also promoting cultural awareness

INK- Fraternity

“The Brothers of Iota Nu Kappa Multicultural Fraternity, Inc. strive to accept and promote the ideals and virtues of multiculturalism and the products of such in hopes of raising awareness and educating others of the benefits and advantages of diversity in race, color, creed, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion and disability. We aspire to inspire and to be influential members who believe in and embody these values, not only on campus, but in the surrounding community and global society.”

SAC- Student Athletic Advisory Committee

SAC is a body of student athletes who exist to help build bridges between athletes and other students in the university. In mobilizing student athletes to get involved in campus life, the organize several events throughout the year which are attended by students and members of the community.

Office of International Programs

The OIP has primary responsibility for coordinating University of Maine international academic and outreach initiatives, activities and programs. The OIP fosters and supports international education on campus, and strives to promote international understanding and global awareness. OIP is a unit of Academic Affairs.

Muslim Student Association

The MSA exists to strive for a better understanding of Islam at UMaine. Additionally, the focus on building bridges between communities and creating a sense of family for Muslim students on campus.

Spanish Club

Spannish Clibis a place where students can come to practice their Spanish in a relaxed environment, whether they are at the elementary level or native speakers. We play games, hang out and talk, and occasionally participate in events such as CultureFest.

Wilde Stein

The Wilde Stein Alliance for Sexual Diversity named after Oscar Wilde and Gertrude Stein,  is an alliance of students who embrace the spectrum of sexualities and genders and offers students the opportunity to socialize in a safe, accepting place, as well as to inform and support the LGBT community.

The group meets every Thursday at 7pm in the FFA Room in the Memorial Union. Students interested in joining Wilde Stein are encouraged to attend a meeting on Thursdays at 7pm, come by the Rainbow Resource Center on the second floor of the Memorial Union

The American Indian Science and Engineering Society

The mission of the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is to substantially increase the representation of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in engineering, science, and other related technology disciplines.
