Though tidal energy could be a valuable source of affordable, renewable energy for coastal regions, some of the best tidal currents are near sensitive areas for fish spawning and feeding.

• Studies are underway at a potential tidal turbine site in Eastport, Maine to better understand the impact a tidal energy project could have on fish.
• Year-round hydroacoustic surveys show the amount of fish at the sites, as well as when and at what depths they appear.
• Laboratory studies and a test turbine suspended below a barge show how fish act around a turbine.
