New Courses for Spring 2012 - MLC 190 Travel in Literature and Film

The course looks at films and texts that include various types of travel and travelers.  These include Don Quixote, the Saint James Way (a pilgrimage route for both the spiritual and adventurous),  The Motorcycle Diaries of Che Guevara,  The Mosquito Coast, and women who went to war – who travels  to a country during wartime and why? – during the Spanish Civil War and lived to write about it.  We will read and view an equal amount of texts and films, in order to see the reasons why people travel and what happens to them when they do.   There will be a mixture of fact and fantasy, madness and commitment to real-life ideals.  Students will write several brief reaction papers and do a final project.  Regular participation in discussions is essential as well.
