A look at the food (and lack of food) in Spanish-speaking countries, through myth, fiction, poetry, and especially a wide range of films, from both classical and pop culture.

Examples of topics:
Corn and creation myths among the Maya
Some like it hot – the story of chili peppers
Luis Buñuel: the hungry upper class vs. the starving peasants
Peruvian cuisine – a history in film
Paella vs. the “other” foods of Iberia
Like Water for Chocolate (Como agua para chocolate, Mexico)
Strawberry and Chocolate (Fresa y chocolate, Cuba)
National beverages and their cultural roles
Hemingway’s “The Spanish Earth” – eating (or not) during wartime

Requirements:
Regular written participation
2 essays
1 presentation/project
