Today many might define the world as an elsewhere in a state of crisis, and cinema as a digital stream on a mobile screen. This class offers an alternative geography to what constitutes both the world and its cinema, situates “world cinema” as a term in film studies, and closely analyzes selected works from a broad regional, national and transnational context. The class approaches both dominant film cultures (Hollywood) and peripheral practices (art cinema) which find various distribution outlets: multiplexes, art house cinemas, museums, film festivals and the Internet. Students will learn basic skills in film analysis, write reviews on films of various genres and forms, develop a comprehensive research project on a topic of their interest, and discuss issues such as politics, labor, mobility, identity and migration in film.
