Mitchell Center Research - Mercury in Acadia National Park: Synthesizing a rich history of research at a highly sensitive site
This project follows on a working group, convened in 2011, charged with developing research priorities that address natural resource managers’ questions about mercury in the environment and identifying ways to incorporate participatory mercury research into science education (Mercury in Acadia and Northeast Protected Areas). Sarah Nelson, Dave Evers of the BioDiversity Research Institute, Dave Krabbenhoft and C. Eagles-Smith of the US Geological Survey, and Celia Chen of Dartmouth College are working to summarize research in Acadia National Park regarding mercury. A workshop report is available.
Do coastal Maine lakes have fish higher in mercury? A targeted survey including lakes in Acadia National Park
This project expands the set of lakes sampled for fish mercury analysis in Maine, and investigates whether coastal lakes tend to have greater exposure and bioaccumulation of mercury in fish. The project is part of Ph.D. student Linda Bacon’s research with UMaine PIs Sarah Nelson, Aria Amirbahman, and Steve Norton.
