Julia McGuire
Graduate Research Assistant, Sustainability Solutions Initiative
PhD Student, Ecology and Environmental Science
University of Maine

Julia McGuireWhat problem/s are you working to solve?
We’re examining questions of human cooperation and socio-ecological systems dynamics. Human social dynamics are the uncharted territory of sustainability science.  Our team is engaged in a number of projects that will explore the social dynamics that help make the difference between sustainable and unsustainable socio-ecological systems.

What progress are you making toward solutions?
I am currently in the data collection process, interviewing SSI faculty.

How could your findings contribute to a more sustainable future in Maine and beyond?
It’s top secret until our data collection is complete, but there may be many interesting ways to apply cooperation research in sustainability.

Why did you decide to join SSI?
SSI is entirely unique and a leader in working to solve questions of sustainability. It is exciting to be a part of an initiative that encourages me to combine fields of study that I love while challenging me to think innovatively. I’ll be applying these new ways of thinking to interests including sustainable food systems, which I hope to pursue for my dissertation research.

What’s the best part about collaborating on SSI research projects?
The ability to share in the many perspectives and incredible experience of my colleagues, classmates, and professors.

Where’s your favorite place in Maine?
Camp!

What’s your ultimate Maine experience?
Cross-country skiing with my brother to camp to cut down our spindly hemlock Christmas tree and the ensuing annual negotiation about who gets to saw down the tree.

Mud season survival strategy?
Puddle-stomping.

What sustains you?
Happy crispy roast chicken.
