The Sustainability Solutions Initiative is a state-wide partnership with undergraduate colleges and universities across Maine. Partner institutions contribute directly to the goals and objectives of the core research focus on sustainability science through interdisciplinary research teams, integrated educational activities, and workforce development activities.
“By engaging the people who care for a place with researchers who are willing to direct their studies to answer questions important for land use policy, conservation and stewardship, we are developing a model for collaborative research that supports community goals for sustaining local values.”
—Christine Feurt, Director, Center for Sustainable Communities
University of New England
Our interdisciplinary research teams work in close partnership with stakeholders to maximize the relevance and potential value of research for decision-making. Our collaborative approach rests on a foundation of mutual respect, open communication, and a belief in the value of diverse ideas and experiences. Current stakeholder partners include tribal governments, state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations and the private sector.
“Anytime you can get experienced fishermen, who have lived their lives on the water, together with university researchers, who have the richness of their scientific background, generally, good things happen.”
—Will Hopkins, Executive Director, Cobscook Bay Resource Center
