National History Day (April 12, 2014)

The University of Maine Humanities Initiative will sponsor and co-sponsor various events relating to Maine’s participation in National History Day. The annual theme for the 2014 National History Day is “Rights and Responsibilities in History.”

Schedule of Events

Thursday, September 26, 2013, 4:30-6:00pm: Pizza & Information Session at Bangor Public Library (an informal discussion and presentation for teachers, students, and parents).

Thursday, October 24, 2013, 9:00am-2:00pm: All-day National History Day Teacher Institute on UMaine Orono campus. Teachers will receive a stipend for outside-of-school reading and districts will be paid for substitute teachers costs. Anticipated workshop topics include UMaine Associate Professor of History Liam Riordan on integrating National History Day and Maine Learning Results; Mary Okin, UMaine Adjunct Professor of Women’s Studies and Franco-American Studies, on “Rights, Responsibilities, and Acadians”; and UMaine Humanities Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow in Digital Humanities Christopher Ohge on helping students to build websites for National History Day.

Saturday, April 12, 2014: Maine National History Day competition on UMaine Orono campus (10:00am-4:00pm).

June 15-19, 2014: National competition at University of Maryland, College Park & Washington D.C.
