Odysseus in MaineCombat Trauma and the Trials of Homecoming

May 12-14, 2015

A statewide coalition of partners has joined together to host discussions about how to better support our veterans when they return home. We will benefit from the unique insight of Dr. Jonathan Shay at these events.

Dr. Jonathan Shay is a psychiatrist who has specialized in treating combat veterans. He was a staff psychiatrist in the Department of Veteran Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Boston. Viewing the experiences of combat veterans from perspectives found in Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey led him to write Achilles in Vietnam and Odysseus in America. He is a recipient of a MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant” and has held varied positions at the US Naval War College, Office of the US Army, and the US Army War College. He will meet with various groups on the UMaine campus in Orono on March 13-14.

Events will be held in Portland and Augusta on May 12, and at the University of Maine in Orono on May 13-14.

The highlight of these events is a free public keynote lecture by Dr. Shay at UMaine on Wednesday, May 13 at 6 p.m.
