Maine Humanities Summit (May 17, 2013)

The University of Maine Humanities Initiative hosted a daylong Humanities Summit at the Governor Hill Mansion in Augusta on Friday, May 17, 2013. Colin Woodard, acclaimed Maine journalist and author of award-winning books, including The Lobster Coast and American Nations, delivered a lunchtime address titled “Liberal Arts in the Real World: An Author-Historian-Journalist’s Argument for the Importance of the Humanities.”

The Summit convened arts and humanities professionals, academic administrators, legislators, and policymakers from throughout the state. Featured speakers and panelists included directors of state agencies, public libraries, historical societies, civic festivals, and faculty from the University of Maine System and elsewhere. Varied presentations and panels provided space to discuss the present place and future relationship of the humanities (broadly construed) to the State of Maine and its citizens.
