Goals and Specifications

Goals

As a class we decided on a set of project objectives which each team strive to meet. We used the request given by Kim Keeley as while as our own ideas of what the project should be to formulate the objectives. The purpose of setting project objectives is to give a direction to the teams which will lead to finished products that best meet the needs of our client.

Project Objectives:

  • Design for average size African adult missing both legs
  • Easily accessible design for double amputee
  • Able to go uphill and downhill over rough terrain
  • Able to carry removable 5 gallon pail of cargo (water for testing purposes)
  • Has effective braking system
  • Stable on hilly terrain
  • Total cost of parts and materials limited to $200 (US dollars wholesale cost)
  • Easily built and repaired by local labor
  • No complex machining (light machining and welding only)
  • Contains a new and patentable idea

Specifications

Using the project objectives as a guideline we set a list of specifications that as a team we would try to meet. Our initial specifications changed after beginning the design of our trike. The list below is the updated specs.

Specifications:

  • Weight no more than 75 lbs.
  • 12” ground clearance
  • No wider than 4’
  • Braking device stops trike within 10’ @ 10mph
  • 250lb person + 50lb cargo capacity
  • 3 wheels
  • Hand powered
  • Has foot/leg rest
  • All-terrain tires
  • $200 manufactured price maximum
