Laptop Requirement

Mechanical Engineering students are required to have a personal laptop computer that is powerful enough to support the demanding video and computational requirements necessary for coursework. The laptop should be capable of running Solidworks 2014 (system requirements are listed at

  • Dedicated video processor compatible with SolidWorks (certified cards and drivers)
  • 500GB hard drive
  • Wireless Ethernet (802.11 g/n)
  • Three-year warranty
  • Microsoft Office
Laptops that have been specifically configured for Mechanical Engineering students are available for purchase through the Computer Connection (located inside the University Bookstore). The specs are, Lenovo ThinkPad W540, Core i7 4700MQ 2.4GHz, Widows 7 Pro 64 bit, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD Writer, NVIDIA Quadro K1100M, 1920 x 1080 Display, Bluetooth, Webcam, 9 cell battery, weight 5.6 lbs, 3 Year Depot Warranty. The price is $1479. It does not come preinstalled with Microsoft Office.  However, Microsoft  Office University 365 with a four year subscription is available for purchase for $77.

Students do not need to purchase SolidWorks at the present time.


The Mechanical Engineering department requires students to own a calculator and recommends the TI-89 model from Texas Instruments.
