Professor John Lyman received the B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts College in 1947, and began his 44 years of continuous service to the University of Maine in 1948. For 12 of those years he was also chair of the department.
John’s contributions to the department, college and university were significant at many levels. He provided stability in the leadership of the university as a chairman of the Council of Colleges in a period of extreme student unrest. Furthermore, he played the role of elder statesman on numerous university committees, task teams and councils.
