Instructor sought for MAT 107: Elementary Descriptive Geometry

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Maine seeks an experienced K-12 math teacher or higher education mathematics teacher preparation faculty member to teach two sections of MAT 107: Elementary Descriptive Geometry in the Fall 2011 semester, and possibly beyond.

The course is designed to prepare students to teach the geometry included in a modern NCTM Standards-based K-8 curriculum. Emphasis is on geometric exploration activities, problem solving and informal deductive reasoning, using manipulatives to teach geometric concepts in grades K-8.

Enrollment is capped at 28 students per section in order to facilitate group learning in a special purpose classroom equipped with a ceiling mounted smart, short-throw projector, laptop, whiteboards and manipulative storage cabinets. Students are primarily majors in child development, art education, elementary education, or secondary education.

Section 500 will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am-12:15pm.
Section 501 will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm-3:15pm.

Classes begin August 29, 2011 and run through December 9, 2011.
Final exam week runs December 12 through December 16, 2011, and final grades are due December 23, 2011.

Part-time faculty in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics are provided office space with a desk, a FirstClass email account, and access to necessary teaching supplies, including photocopying.

Interested candidates should provide a cover letter stating their interest in and qualifications for the position, resume, and three references with contact information to the Department Chair at the address below.

This search will remain open until a qualified candidate is found. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. Appropriate background checks will be required. Contingent upon satisfactory performance and funding availability, the successful candidate may be offered MAT 107 or related teaching assignments in the Spring 2012 semester and beyond.

On January 1, 2011, UMaine joined a growing number – now nearly 400 – of colleges and universities around the country that are tobacco-free. Implementation followed more than three years of study and planning managed by a committee of faculty members, staff members, and students. A good deal of information about UMaine’s plan and the new policy is online here.
