Writing Ourselves: A Marathon Event!

Don’t miss our annual rite to celebrate writing:

Dear Maine Writing Project colleagues and friends,

We’re bringing the 10th Annual Writing Ourselves to Bangor on Saturday, April 7th. Over the years, we’ve hosted this event as a day for TCs to come together and just write.

This year, we hope you will join us for a writing workshop conducted by Gary Lawless. Lawless, winner of the Maine Humanities Council’s Constance H. Carlson Public Humanities Prize, is a poet and activist known for his work with communities of people whose voices aren’t often heard. “He is bringing poetry to Mainers who just would not otherwise have poetry in their day-to-day lives,” Hayden Anderson of the MHC says. “If there’s anyone out there day in and day out, year in and year out, working to bring poetry to every single Mainer, Gary is the guy.”

In this workshop session, Lawless will talk about his writing life and how he’s come to share that passion and a sense of activism with new and recent Mainers so that they can find and express their voices. He will guide participants through some of the same processes, activities, prompts, and writing rituals that he uses to help people find and express their voice through poetry.

In the afternoon, the 2018 Fellows will attend orientation. We encourage TCs to join us for a writing marathon, or to take time for their own writing life or to visit with MWP friends.
