The Maine Writing Project has announced two new Tanya Baker Scholars for 2017: Anne Miller ’05 and Amy Clement ’06. The Baker Scholar is awarded to Maine Writing Project teacher-consultants that exemplify thoughtful teaching, inspired scholarship, and singular contributions to the Maine Writing Project community.

Anne Miller joined the Maine Writing Project in 2005. She has served on our leadership team and has led professional development efforts, including teaching and redesigning the mentoring program in its early years. Anne is a former English teacher and Library/Media Specialist at Maine Central institute, an independent high school in Pittsfield, Maine. Currently, she is Director of Curriculum for MSAD #53, a position she has held for ten years. She is also an adjunct instructor at UMaine and UMA. Anne earned her Master’s degree in 1997 and her Doctor of Education degree in Literacy Education at UMaine this May. She is a recognized authority regarding young adult literature. Anne enjoys skiing and hiking, and spending time with her young adult children. Anne’s  husband, Ed, and children Nick and Cassie, are all UM Black Bears.

Amy Clement joined the Maine Writing Project in 2006. For multiple years, Amy co-directed MWP Invitational Summer Institutes at Orono where she was instrumental in shaping the program. Amy was formerly an English teacher at Central High School in Corinth, Maine, and she is currently a Literacy Coach and Interventionist at Central High School and Middle School. She completed her Masters degree in 2008 and is currently pursuing a CAS in Literacy Education at UMaine where she is also an adjunct faculty member in literacy. An avid runner, Amy has twice run to the top of Mount Washington! Amy and her husband Ed live in Bangor where they have raised four kids.

The Tanya N. Baker Scholar was established in 2008 in celebration of the contributions made to the Maine Writing Project and the educational community of Maine by our former co-director, Tanya N. Baker. Past Baker Scholars include Jean Plummer ’98, Janet Nordfors ’02, Maureen Montgomery ’02, Dave Boardman ’03, Debra Butterfield ’03, Cindy Dean ’04, and Douglas “Woody” Woodsum ’08. Anne and Amy will be recognized at MWP 20, the 20th anniversary celebration of the Maine Writing Project on July 7th.
