Appalachian Trail Work

For over 50 years, the members of the Maine Outing Club have volunteered their time to maintain a section of the Appalachian Trail, giving it the honor of being one of just two colleges left in the state of Maine which still maintains a section of the Appalachian Trail.

Our section is about 10 miles long and runs from Baker’s Siding (north of Bingham) to Bald Mountain Pond Outlet (west of Blanchard). We also maintain a side-trail to North Peak of Moxie Bald Mt. This section includes the 2,630 ft mountain and sports two lean-tos for hikers’ use. The views from the summit include the mountains near Sugarloaf to the southwest, the town of Lake Moxie, Moosehead Lake, and as far as Mt. Katahdin to the northeast.

Each semester the club organizes an AT work trip. During the trip we make sure that the trail is worthy of thru hikers nearing their last stretch of Appalachian Trail in the Fall. This includes clearing brush, painting trail blazes, building water bars, and campsite maintenance. The MOC provides all of the trail maintenance equipment that is needed and there is always a hearty cookout.
