2013 UMaine Clinical Geriatrics Colloquium Serving Our Older Veterans Today’s Clinical Issues and Best Practices
Monday, May 13, 2013
7:45 am—5:45 pm

There were 9.2 million veterans 65 and older in 2011 representing 43% of the total number of military veterans in the United States. Among the major challenges faced in serving these individuals are: 1) developing programs and services that respond to the health needs of a rapidly aging veteran population; and 2) insuring that those in need of care are aware of and make use of such services.
This colloquium offers a platform for sharing the personal perspectives of older veterans together with the practice experience of clinical assessment and treatment experts in the provision of physical and mental health services for older adult U.S. veterans. Attendees will leave better informed about the capacities of and challenges facing older veterans and the resources available to them in the state of Maine.

(color. 84+ min. Aron Gaudet, Made in assoc. with American Documentary/P.O.V.)
The SXSW Special Jury Award winning “The Way We Get By” is a deeply moving film about life and how to live it. Beginning as a seemingly idiosyncratic story about troop greeters – a group of senior citizens who gather daily at a small airport to thank American soldiers departing and returning from Iraq, the film quickly turns into a moving, unsettling and compassionate story about aging, loneliness, war and mortality.

Event: Airblast Sprayer Calibration Clinic and Twilight Meeting
When: Tue, May 21 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Description: Airblast Sprayer Calibration Clinic and Twilight Meeting

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and the Maine Vegetable & Small Fruit Growers Association will hold a sprayer calibration clinic for airblast sprayers at David Pike’s Farm to You in Farmington on Tuesday, May 21 at 2:00 p.m. George Hamilton with the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension will demonstrate new tools for making sure your sprayer is delivering the correct rate of pesticides to your crops. Having a sprayer properly calibrated will improve the effectiveness of your sprays, and can save you money by reducing the amount of pesticide used and reducing crop losses due to pests. Participants will receive two pesticide applicator recertification credits.

The calibration clinic will be followed at 5:00 p.m. by a tour of David Pike’s strawberry and vegetable fields. David has been a leader in innovative strawberry production techniques, including raised beds, plastic mulch, fertigation, fall cropping, and season extension. There will be some new low tunnel technology on display, as well as replant experiments and new varieties on trial. One pesticide applicator recertification credit will be awarded for the meeting.

Pike’s Farm to You is located at 115 Mount View Road (corner of Routes 2 & 4 and the Whittier Road) in Farmington, Maine 04938. There will be signs posted. The farm phone number is 207.778.2187. Cost for the clinic is free and no registration is required. For more information, please contact David Handley at 207.933.2100 or david.handley@maine.edu.

Event: Join the launch of VolturnUS 1:8
When: Fri, May 31 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Description: You are invited to join us for the launch of VolturnUS 1:8, the first grid-connected floating offshore wind turbine to be deployed off the coast of the United States. The event will be held at Cianbro Constructors, 517 South Main Street, Brewer, Maine on May 31, 2013 at 11 AM.

The VolturnUS technology is the culmination of over five years of collaborative R&D conducted by the University of Maine-led DeepCwind Consortium. The DeepCwind Consortium Research Program is a unique public-private partnership funded by the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation-Partnerships for Innovation, the Maine Technology Institute, the State of Maine, the University of Maine, and over 30 industrial partners.

The program goal is to reduce the cost of offshore wind to 10 cents/kWh by 2020, in order to compete with other forms of electricity generation without subsidies.
This launch celebrates an important milestone in the development of a cost-effective, job-creating, innovative U.S. offshore wind technology.
