Beef - 24th Annual Maine Beef Conference

Keeping Your Herd Healthy

From south: Take I-95 North to Exit 187 Hogan Rd turn right off ramp. At next traffic light turn left on to Haskell Rd. Follow Haskell Rd to hotel.

From north: Take I-95 South to Exit 187 Hogan Rd turn left off the ramp. At second traffic light turn left on to Haskell Rd. Follow Haskell Rd to hotel.

The 24th Annual Maine Beef Conference is hosted by Maine Beef Producers Association and Maine Grass Farmers Network; the topic is Herd Health.

Sponsors: University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry, and Hilton Garden Inn,  Zinpro, Pineland Natural Meats, Cold Spring Ranch, Wellscroft Fence.

Coffee and pastries will be available for morning refreshments; hot lunch will be served.

Vendor Trade Show throughout the day.

This year’s conference will focus on herd health. More details to be announced.

Speaker Information

Jeff Wheeler – Key Accounts Manager with Zinpro Corporation. He grew up on a Dairy farm in PA.

Went to college at the University of Georgia and received a BS in Dairy science and an MS in Ruminant Nutrition. Jeff managed the UGA Dairy for 5 years in Athens, GA and then did Nutritional Consulting for 8 years following graduate school in the Midwest. He has been with Zinpro Corporation for the last 13 years.  Jeff also owns Wheelers Angus Beef Ranch in Tioga County PA. They currently have 70 Angus Cow/ Calf operations and finish their own calves. They sell all our finished Beef through their meat store locally.

Dr. Simon Alexander, VMD will speak on herd health issues in Maine. Simon graduated in 2004 from University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation he worked in Dover-Foxcroft for 2-1/2 years before co-purchasing Penobscot Veterinary Hospital in the fall of 2006. After six years with Penobscot Veterinary Services, Dr. Alexander has now founded Exeter Veterinary Services. While his prior areas of practice included companion and large animals of all kinds, his sole focus is now on large animals with an emphasis on dairy cattle. He continues to provide services to clients in Penobscot and surrounding counties, as well as his home county of Aroostook.

Dr. Anne Lichtenwalner, University of Maine Cooperative Extension Veterinarian & Director of the Animal Diagnostic Lab will talk about how the diagnostic lab helps cattle producers in Maine.

Cindy Kilgore, Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation & Forestry will be speaking on bio security.

Gabe Clark, Cold Spring Ranch will talk about Economics of Herd Health.
