Statement of Mission, Charge and Composition
The LGBTAC is charge with advising senior administrators, through the Vice President for Student Life, about the concerns and needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community (students, faculty and staff) at the University of Maine. The Council also promotes education and awareness activities for the campus community, advocates for the inclusion of relevant material and approaches in the academic curriculum, and provides a forum for expressing the needs of the LGBT community.
The LGBTAC includes representatives from all segments of the University of Maine community: undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, professional and classified staff. The Council will have one or two-chairs. In the case of co-chairs, one may be a student. If there is a single chair, it shall be an employee of the University. Members shall be appointed by the Vice President for Student Affairs, who may request recommendations from current Council members. Members are selected for two year terms and may be reappointed. Ex Officio members include the Director of Equal Opportunity (or their designee) and the Liaison for LGBT Services.
- Providing for the education of the campus community to raise the general awareness for the need for tolerances and the advantages of respecting diversity.
- Problem solving in issues of discrimination and harassment aimed at the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered members of the campus community.
- Advising faculty on ways to include gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered issues in course work for such fields as counseling, social work, human development, and psychology.
- Providing a forum for expressing the needs of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community.
