Faculty Highlights - Beth Wieman

A painter works within the borders of a canvas. A writer, within the confines of syntax and grammar. But for UMaine composer Beth Wiemann, sound knows no bounds.  “I start with little tiny sentences, then I twist them around and essentially make them taffylike,” Wiemann says of her creative process. “You can push and pull sound in a way that you can’t do with words.   With words, it’s repetition. With music, it’s changing the length of one syllable to make this time thing happen.”  Wiemann has been bending notes to her will since high school. She has written more than 100 original compositions, yet she still thrives on experimentation.
