Harlan Onsrud is Professor of Spatial Informatics in the School of Computing and Information Science and a research scientist with the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA). Professor Onsrud has been an exceptional leader in outreach and public service with his contributions encompassing countless activities on campus, in the State, nationally and internationally. At the same time, Harlan has maintained a strong record in scholarship with research focused on the analysis of legal, ethical, and institutional issues affecting the creation and use of digital databases and the assessment of the social impacts of location technologies. Among contributions on campus, he has served on dozens of committees, is active with the Faculty Senate, led establishment of an annual graduate student and faculty retreat for his program and is its graduate coordinator. In service to his disciplinary domain, he is past president and current Executive Director of the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure Association (GSDI), past-president of the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (UCGIS), and past Chair of the U.S. National Committee (USNC) on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) of the National Research Council. He has been selected by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board for Fulbright Specialist teaching assignments in Law, led creation of one of the first open access scholarly journals in his field through its legal conversion and led creation of the Geographic Information Knowledge Network (http://www.giknet.org) which is enhancing technology transfer among geospatial specialists across nations and communities spanning the globe.
