Faculty Awards - Outstanding Faculty Award in Research Creative Achievement

Dr. Sandy Sigmon’s major research area is women’s mental and physical health, with an emphasis on conditions that women are at increased risk relative to men. These
conditions include Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), Panic Disorder, fibromyalgia, depression, and eating disorders.  A fundamental theme of much of her research is
the study of cyclical effects (i.e., the menstrual cycle and seasonal change; SAD) and how these potential cyclical stressors impact women’s mood, behavior, and stress reactivity.  Dr. Sigmon has over 50 peer-reviewed publications in 14 different top journals, 12 book chapters, and over 140 papers presented at local, national and international research conferences. She is a reviewer for 14 top journals and has served in editorial capacities for two of them. Dr. Sigmon is one of three researchers in the world who are currently investigating the psychological impact of SAD.  In addition, Dr. Sigmon is considered a world expert on anxiety and the menstrual cycle and her work is often cited and used in graduate courses on anxiety in the United States and abroad. She has been the PI on two federal grants (the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Defense (DoD) totaling $2.5 million.
