Faculty Awards - Outstanding Faculty Award in Service/Outreach Recipient

Dr. Steve Evans has contributed extraordinary service for the Department of English, the University and to the cultural life of the community. In his role as the primary coordinator for the New Writing Series over the past fifteen years, he has organized more than two hundred literary events bringing writers from around the state, the nation, and the world to an audience of thousands of students and communityS Evans 032614_AK_dsc_7827 members. He has also been instrumental in organizing the National Poetry Foundation’s summer conferences, which bring writers and scholars to Orono to discuss poetry and poetics. Evans has directed both the undergraduate (2004-2006) and graduate programs (2007-2011) in his department and has served on the advisory boards of the UMaine Humanities Initiative and the Center for Undergraduate Research. He represented the College on the University Research Council and served on the Executive Board of the Graduate School. In 2012 he was invited by President Ferguson to serve on the President’s Roundtable, a faculty body charged with helping define the “role, relevance, and requirements” of the flagship. From 2007 to 2012 he served as a public member of the Contemporary Art Committee of the Maine Arts Commission and he has served three times as regional judge for the Poetry Out Loud program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation in Chicago. Evans is a faculty advisor to the NEH-funded High Performance Sound Technologies for Access and Scholarship (HiPSTAS) project and literary advisor for the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston’s upcoming exhibition on the history and legacy of Black Mountain College.
