The KTA Team - Administrative Staff

Hugh Stevens  | KTA Co-PI | KTA Director

Prior to coming to the University of Maine, Hugh was the Chief Financial Officer – Executive Vice President for a regional non-profit in Rochester, New York.  He had full financial responsibility for an annual budget of over 5 million dollars and 40+ employees. Hugh’s non-profit service was preceded by over 10 years as a managerial consultant and as founder and principal partner of a clothing manufacturing firm located in Toronto and New York.

Hugh has experience in leveraging  personal and professional relationships which bring together all parties necessary to facilitate and provide strategic consultation, product and service viability, financial advisement, as well as creating, writing, presenting, and implementing those strategies to improve growth by identifying increasingly competitive product offerings which augment existing revenue streams and maximize production efficiencies.

Research Interests: Firm-regulatory relationships and efficient-inefficient decision-making

Senthil Sockalingam  | KTA Assistant Director

Senthil received a B.Sc. in Business Administration (Concentration: Accounting) and M.Sc. in Accounting from the University of Maine. His major areas of interest are in financial accounting, cost accounting and behavioral accounting. He also has an interest in finance as he has taken most of the finance courses (as electives) offered at the Maine Business School and he is specifically interested in Portfolio Management Theory.

Currently, he is pursuing his professional certifications in the CFA & CPA examinations. During his undergraduate years, he had an internship with PricewaterhouseCoopers where he worked in Advisory (Corporate Finance-Merger & Acquisitions Section) and then in Assurance Services

He assisted in closing a divestment deal, coordinated audit testing in bank reconciliations & accounts receivables for a low-cost airline company and produced audit stat evaluations for an automotive manufacturing company. He also worked as an assistant accountant for a retail management company in Malaysia (Melium Group) where he acquired experience in system chain analysis and budget analysis.

During his master’s, he completed his graduate assistantship in the Higher Education Department as a Resident Director to try something different and outside of his career line. He managed a residence hall, supervised resident assistants and managed the departments’ budget.

Research Interests: Financial accounting and behavioral accounting.

George Criner |  KTA Co-PI |  Director, SOE

George Criner is the Director of the School of Economics, University of Maine. He alongside Dean Mahon is a principal investigator leading the Knowledge Transfer Alliance (KTA) project. The School of Economics (SOE) was formed in 2007 through a merger with the longstanding Department of Economics and Department of Resource Economics and Policy.

Director Criner’s creation of the School’s by-laws as well as his determination to progress forward has provided the University of Maine with a faculty of over 20 economists with various research interests and industrial knowledge.

Research Interests: Waste Management Economics; International Agricultural and Resource Trade and Related Issues

Previous Degrees: Ph.D. Agricultural Economics, Washington State University; M.S. Agricultural Economics, University of Tennessee

John Mahon  |  KTA Co-PI  |  Dean BPPH

John F. Mahon is Professor of Management and the John M. Murphy Chair of International Business Policy and Strategy at the Maine Business School, University of Maine and Dean, College of Business Public Policy and Health.  He was the founding director of the School of Policy and International Affairs at UM.  From 2004 to 2006, he served as Provost ad interim.  Prior to his appointment at Maine, Professor Mahon was a professsor of strategy and policy and chair of the Strategy and Policy Department at the School of Management at Boston University. He alongside Director Criner is a principal investigator.

Research Interests: Professor Mahon’s research and teaching interests focus on four specific areas: (1) how organizations shape and influence public policy and combat interest groups; (2) how organizations plan and execute strategy in negotiated environments; (3) how organizations use reputation for profit and to blunt public policy and interest group initiatives; and (4) how organizations anticipate and respond to organizational crises.

Previous Degrees: D.B.A. from Boston University, M.B.A. (with honors) from Bryant College, and  B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
