100 Years of 4-H Spaghetti Dinner June 15

On the last evening of Barnyard Bash, Saturday, June 15, beginning at 6:00pm, Knox-Lincoln 4-H leaders, parents and youth will prepare and serve a spaghetti dinner at the restaurant building of Union Fairgrounds.
Heidi Baker to Take on New Position at Aldermere Farm

Heidi Baker, leader of the Aldermere Achievers 4-H club, has earned the position of Herd Manager at Aldermere Farm in Rockport, Maine. In the words of her father, Ron Howard, “Heidi will assume full responsibility as Herd Manager…while also being responsible for all cattle health care, feed and nutrition as well as sales and sourcing of cattle. Heidi has developed the skills of our 4-H members to the extent that she supervises and leads them doing farm tasks like weighing cattle as well as giving vaccinations. This support has freed up time for the Farm staff to perform other work and been a great addition. Cattle sold and sourced in recent years have led her to become connected with Belted Galloway owners from Maine to California and many states in between including Texas, Missouri, Indiana, South Carolina and of course throughout New England as we try to maintain a position of leadership established by the Chatfield family and Heidi’s Grandfather. Heidi also has and will continue to support Program Manager Sarah Post with our Farmhands program. Heidi and her husband Jacob along with daughters Isabelle and Zoe will be moving into the farmhouse sometime this Fall where they can keep a good eye on the herd.”

Congratulations, Heidi!

Katherine Newcombe Awarded Maine 4-H Foundation Scholarship

Katherine Newcombe, member of the Jolly Farmers 4-H Club and Junior Leader of the Jolly Juniors 4-H Club, both of Whitefield, has been awarded a 2013 Maine 4-H Foundation Post-Secondary Education Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded annually to several Maine 4-H youth based on a combination of demonstrated academic and 4-H excellence. Katherine will be awarded the scholarship officially at the Maine 4-H Foundation Annual Meeting on May 16 at the University of Maine in Orono. Congratulations, Katherine!

Dinner and Auction to Benefit Aldermere Achievers 4-H

There will be a Public Chowder Dinner and Auction on Friday May 3rd from 5-7pm. This is a fundraiser for the Aldermere Achievers 4-H Club for members to attend a Clipping Camp this summer. Choose from homemade haddock or corn chowder, bread, salad, dessert, and beverage. $7 per adult, $4 per child; $20 max. per household.
Can Your Club Adopt a Barn for 4-H Farm-to-Fair?

Believe it or not, planning for Union Fair has begun! The 4-H Farm-to-Fair barns were packed with their display materials for the winter and it is time to make sure that each of them is ready for Union Fair 2013.This year we are asking clubs to consider “adopting” one of the barns to make sure it is clean, in good repair and stocked with everything needed for fair time. This will require checking the barn in spring or early summer to inventory its contents, allowing time to make repairs or order supplies needed before the fair (the cost of supplies can be covered by KLLA). Then on Fair Clean-up Day on August 12, your club will set up the display as it will be for fair week. You can even check on the barn once or twice during fair week to make sure everything is in order.

If your club would like to adopt a 4-H Farm-to-Fair barn, contact Cindy Rogers 207.832.0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Celebrating 100 Years of 4-H in Maine at Union Fair 2013

Remember that 2013 marks 100 Years of 4-H in Maine. Earn a special ribbon at Union Fair 2013 for your club exhibit or individual exhibit following a “Theme of 100”. This can be specifically 100 years of 4-H or 100 of anything! Use your imaginations and make plans! Fair information books and entry forms for club and individual exhibits will be available soon. Keep an eye on future newsletter posts.

Time to File E-postcard

If your club raises funds and has an EIN (Employer ID Number) on file with the IRS, it is time once again to file the E-990 e-postcard online. It is very important that all clubs with EINs file by May 15, 2013. Once you have filed successfully, please print and send a copy of your confirmation to our office. If you have further questions regarding this filing requirement, feel free to contact Cindy Rogers: 207.832.0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Club Visits

In the coming year, 4-H Community Education Assistant Cindy Rogers plans to visit clubs in Knox and Lincoln Counties to get to know the members and see what clubs are doing! If you would like to have Cindy visit one of your club meetings or events, contact her at cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 207.832.0343.

News from The Muddy Mustangs

The Muddy Mustangs 4-H unmounted meeting was held on March 1st at the Jefferson School in Jefferson, Maine. Melanie Langmeyer, a representative from the Equine Welfare Alliance (MEWA) was our guest at our 4-H meeting. They had used school saddles donated to them which they brought to the meeting along with tack cleaning supplies. Our members cleaned the saddles so the MEWA can sell the saddles and raise money for their cause. We were teamed up in pairs by more advanced members and less advanced, each pair given a saddle to clean and get under flaps. We horse crazy kids were happy to know that we could do something to help horses in need. Also, our Jefferson members have been collecting scrap paper and taking it to the recycling center to help reduce pollution and waste, we have taken some huge bags to the transfer station. Our mounted lessons held every other week, have been very busy and full throughout the winter season. With the warmer spring weather we are reminded why we call our club the Muddy Mustangs. Lyla C., age 10

How Many Pennies Has Your Club Collected?

KLLA has issued a challenge to clubs: collect pennies throughout the year, deposit them in a designated jar at your club meetings. Bring the jar to the 2013 Achievement Celebration in October for counting. The club that collects the most pennies will get to enjoy an ice cream party at one of their club meetings! Your contributions will help fund county-wide events and programs that you enjoy all year. Keep us updated with your totals so we can post everyone’s progress!

4-H Accident Insurance Payments Requested

The Knox-Lincoln Leaders’ Association has voted to pay the cost of accident insurance in 2013 for all enrolled Knox-Lincoln 4-H members and leaders, covering them at 4-H events and meeting activities for the year. We are asking clubs and individual members who are able to reimburse the cost of this insurance (which is $1 per member, $2 for each horse project member or leader) back to KLLA. We thank you for your assistance.

Come Join Us for 4-H@UMaine, May 17-18!

Over 400 other websites have linked to the 4-H history website. Check it out, and maybe add your 4-H story! http://4-hhistorypreservation.com/

Penny Challenge for an Ice Cream Party!

Sign up for the 4-H Photography Workshop

We are offering a Photography Workshop for 4-H members on Saturday, April 27, 10am-2pm at the KL Cooperative Extension office.
Barnyard Bash Presenters/Volunteers Wanted

The Knox-Lincoln Leaders’ Association will once again present Barnyard Bash at Union Fairgrounds June 14-16, 2013. We already have some great workshops and activities lined up for this overnight event! If you would like to lead an activity, craft or other workshop, or if you would just like to help out, contact Cindy Rogers at 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, or Darlene Newcombe at 462-4532, dstnewcombe@gmail.com. All workshops must be confirmed by May 3, so contact us now!

Consider Participating in Global Youth Service Day

Knox-Lincoln 4-H wants to encourage youth in our counties to participate in Global Youth Service Day by volunteering to clean up garden beds or perform other needed tasks at nearby community gardens and school gardens. Then tell us about it!

April 26-28, 2013, marks the 25th year of Global Youth Service Day. This event is celebrated in more than 100 countries, and recognizes the positive impact that young people have on their communities 365 days a year. Organized by YSA (Youth Service America), a leader in the international youth service movement, Global Youth Service Day offers youth, ages 5 to 25, the resources and support to plan meaningful projects that improve their communities. Learn more at http://gysd.org/.

4-H Farm-to-Fair Key Volunteers Needed

In order to continue the success of this exhibit at Union Fair, two key volunteer roles will need to be filled as soon as possible. A Volunteer Coordinator is needed to seek out and organize the schedule of volunteers operating the exhibit for the 8 days that the fair is open (August 17-24, 2013). The person, or team of two, needs to commit to being available for all of these days. If there is a team of two, the times can be shared.

We also seek a Farm Store Coordinator, who will coordinate the products that kids will choose from to take home after they have been through the exhibit. This person will be responsible for procuring enough donations of locally-produced items to fill the store shelves every day the exhibit is open. This will be done prior to fair week, so your presence will not be needed during the fair.

If you can help or want to learn more, contact Cindy Rogers , 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

4-H Science Night at Next KLLA Meeting

The next meeting of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association will be held on March 25 at 6pm at the Knox-Lincoln Extension office. The first 30 minutes of this meeting will feature a hands-on 4-H Science training and activity lead via live video conference by Jennifer Lobley from the Androscoggin-Sagadahoc Counties office. This is a train-the-trainer activity designed to give you something to share with your own club. Don’t miss this event! For more information contact Cindy Rogers 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Club Visits

In the coming year, 4-H Community Education Assistant Cindy Rogers plans to visit clubs in Knox and Lincoln Counties to get to know the members and see what clubs are doing! If you would like to have Cindy visit one of your club meetings or events, contact her at cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 832-0343.

KL 4-H Snow Tubing Event Was Fun!

KLLA sponsored a Snow Tubing Event at Camden Snow Bowl on Saturday, February 2. A small crowd showed up to cruise the tubing hill on this not-too-cold night. Adults and kids all had a great time swooshing down the hill with the occasional hot chocolate break in the heated hut. Snow Bowl staff commented that our 4-Hers are especially polite and that they look forward to having us each year! Thanks to all who came out!

Get Ready for Public Speaking

Plan to participate in the Knox-Lincoln Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament on Sunday, March 10, 1-4pm (snow date March 17). Register to participate by February 25. You can find the registration form and judging guidelines at http://umaine.edu/knox-lincoln/blog/2013/02/04/knox-lincoln-4-h-public-speaking-demonstration-tournament/. The location of this event has not been finalized, but we will keep you posted! In the mean time, be thinking about a subject that you would like to present at the tournament. Pick something that you know a lot about that you would like to share with others. Maybe you know how to make something that could easily be demonstrated in a few minutes. It is easy to do a presentation when you know your subject well! Read the following article about having a mini public speaking clinic at one of your club meetings! Also see the article about the Regional Public Speaking Tournament in Orono. Any member who competes at the county-level competition can also participate in the regional one on March 23. For information, call 832-0343 or email cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Try a Public Speaking Mini-Clinic at Your Club Meeting

Public Speaking is a very important part of 4-H and a valuable life skill for youth and adults. Speaking in front of other people can be an excellent way to show what we know about a subject and teach others about it. Everyone is an expert at something! Through some fun activities, you can learn to organize your thoughts and present a speech or demonstration with confidence. Cindy Rogers and Rita Glaude want to schedule a mini-clinic at one of your club meetings in preparation for the KL Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament in March. Please contact Cindy for more information or to schedule your visit. 832-0434, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Regional Public Speaking Tournament Planned

The 4-H Regional Public Speaking Tournament will be held Saturday, March 23rd at the University of Maine at Orono in the Bangor Room. 4-H Youth ages 9 to 18 who have participated in their county 4-H public speaking tournament are invited to participate.

Registration for the regional tournament must be handled through the youth’s county Extension office. To register youth, county offices should contact Joyce Fortier in the Hancock County Extension Office no later than March 13th at 207-667-8212 or at joyce.fortier@maine.edu. For more information on 4-H public speaking, including guidelines and judging sheets, please visit http://umaine.edu/hancock/programs/hancock-county-4-h/ or contact Lisa Reilich at 207-598-6621 or lisa.reilich@maine.edu.

Check Out the National 4-H History Preservation Web Page

The 4-H History Preservation website is reaching an ever-expanding audience, sharing information about the history of 4-H. During the past 16 months the site has had over 20 thousand U.S. visitors representing every state. Internationally, visitors from 104 nations have been on the site. Over 400 other websites have linked to the 4-H history website. Check it out, and maybe add your 4-H story! http://4-hhistorypreservation.com/

Penny Challenge Has Been Issued!

KLLA has issued a challenge to clubs: collect pennies throughout the year, deposit them in a designated jar at your club meetings. Bring the jar to the 2013 Achievement Celebration in October for counting. The club that collects the most pennies will be recognized (details to come!). Your contributions will help fund county-wide events and programs that you enjoy all year. Keep us updated with your totals so we can post everyone’s progress!

Teen Night Cancelled

It seems that there is not much excitement around a Teen Night, so we have decided to cancel it. If any teens have an idea about something you would like to do as a teen-only event, please contact Cindy, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 832-0343.

Apply Now for National Trips

National 4-H Trips are excellent opportunities to meet 4-H members from across the nation. Participants learn about many career options, and learn through educational workshops at Congress or become a part of a team making recommendations to National 4-H Council at Conference. To learn more about these trips, visit: http://umaine.edu/4h/home/national-4-h-trips/.

Any Maine 4-H Youth, ages 14 to 18, is eligible to apply. Applicants must be current Maine 4-H members both at the time of application and the time of the actual trip. Application packets must be sent to your county office and postmarked by March 15, 2013. If you have any questions, please contact Heidi Thuotte at 1-800-287-1535 or heidi.thuotte@maine.edu.

Dates Announced for 4-H@UMaine

4-H@UMaine will be held May 17 & 18, 2013. Ask someone who has been, this is a FUN weekend and a fantastic opportunity to experience a little bit of college life. If you or your child are between the ages of 12 and 18, save the date and check here in coming months for more details!

Next KLLA Meeting in Waldoboro

The next meeting of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association will be held on February 25 at 6pm at the Knox-Lincoln Extension office. Leaders: if you would like to host a meeting in 2013, please notify Cindy Rogers 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.
