4-H Enrollment Forms Due November 30

4-H Enrollment packets for the 2013-2014 4-H year have been sent to leaders. These forms are to be completed by all returning and new 4-H members and volunteers by November 30, 2013.

Darlene Newcombe Named Volunteer or the Year

Darlene Newcombe, Leader of the Jolly Farmers and Jolly Juniors 4-H clubs, and president of KLLA, was honored on Monday, November 4, at the Knox and Lincoln Counties Extension Association annual meeting as the group’s 2013 Volunteer of the Year. Darlene’s continued enthusiasm and willingness to help at Leaders’ Association events has not gone unnoticed. 4-H Community Education Assistant, Cindy Rogers, presented the award, and cited Darlene’s practical approach to achieving goals for the group, as well as her reliability as a volunteer. Congratulations, Darlene. This award is well-deserved!

Do You Have News? Send It Here!

We have noticed that clubs and members no longer send us news about what they or their clubs are doing in 4-H. We really want to hear from you! A great way to do this is to choose a club reporter who regularly writes a short paragraph; just a sentence or two is fine, about what the club did at their meeting. We welcome your photos, artwork and creative writing as well. We can publish those here or on our Facebook page. Send news items to Cindy: cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Leaders: Join Us for Science Night!

KL Leaders and Junior Leaders, plan to attend a hands-on science training at 5:30pm on December 16, just before our regular KLLA meeting. This will take place at the KL UMaine Extension office and will be lead via teleconference by Jennifer Lobley, UMaine Extension Educator for Volunteer Development. You will receive a kit to take with you and try the activity with your club! Plan to arrive a few minutes before 5:30 so we can start on time. See you there!

4-H Achievement Celebration 2013 001KL Achievement Awards Celebration a Success!

Thanks to all who attended the 2013 4-H Achievement Awards Celebration on October 19. Special thanks to those who helped with preparations, decorations and food donations. The food was wonderful, complete with a 100 Years of 4-H birthday cake! Thank you to St. Denis and the Knights of Columbus for once again allowing us to use the parish center for our event.

We received 16 Cloverbud Activity Records, 30 Project Records and 4 Portfolios this year. The top awards by Project Area went to: Lauren G. and Tyler L. (tie for Beef), Zack S. (Community Service), Hugo S. (Computer Technology), Caitlyn S. (Dairy), Arianna C. (Gardening and Horticulture), Jordan F. and Olivia R. (tie for Horse), Sam. N. (Poultry), Samantha L (Rabbit), and Alessandro S. (Sheep). Special awards included: Jordan F. (Secretary), Sam N. (Team Player) Zack S. (Community Service and Katherine Watier Green Award), Caitlyn S. (Leadership), Saoirse B. (Citizenship), Hugo S. (Outstanding Project Record-Junior), Frances P. (Outstanding Project Record-Intermediate), and Lauren G. (Outstanding Project Record-Senior and Outstanding Portfolio).

Congratulations to all! Check out the Knox Lincoln 4-H Facebook page for photos!

Winners of the KL Penny Challenge

The winning club in the KL Penny Challenge was Muddy Mustangs! They collected a large jar of pennies, which will be added to the treasury of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association for counties-wide events for all. They will be thanked for their efforts with an ice cream party at a future meeting. Thank you!

Photography Contest Winners

There was a wonderful selection of photographs entered in the 2013 KL 4-H Photography Contest this year. The judges, who are a photography professor and a photography and art lecturer at University of Maine in Augusta, enjoyed seeing the work of our talented 4-H members! There were no entries received at the senior level (age 15-18), so the top six scoring photos from each of the junior and intermediate levels will have their photos displayed for the coming year in the 4-H Photo Gallery at the KL UMaine Extension office. Come see them! You will also see these photos in rotation at the top of the KL 4-H Facebook page starting in January.

Hunting Season Alert

Please keep in mind that during hunting season, clubs should not plan hikes or other outdoor activities away from their regular meeting place. Wearing blaze orange is a must when you are outside this time of year, but it is not enough to protect you in wooded areas. It is best to put off such activities until the season has passed. For a complete list of hunting season dates in Maine, go to http://www.maine.gov/ifw/hunting_trapping/pdfs/2013HuntingSeasonsChart.pdf.

KL 4-H Snow Tubing Event Was Fun!

KLLA sponsored a Snow Tubing Event at Camden Snow Bowl on Saturday, February 2. A small crowd showed up to cruise the tubing hill on this not-too-cold night. Adults and kids all had a great time swooshing down the hill with the occasional hot chocolate break in the heated hut. Snow Bowl staff commented that our 4-Hers are especially polite and that they look forward to having us each year! Thanks to all who came out!

Get Ready for Public Speaking

Plan to participate in the Knox-Lincoln Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament on Sunday, March 10, 1-4pm (snow date March 17). Register to participate by February 25. You can find the registration form and judging guidelines at http://umaine.edu/knox-lincoln/blog/2013/02/04/knox-lincoln-4-h-public-speaking-demonstration-tournament/. The location of this event has not been finalized, but we will keep you posted! In the mean time, be thinking about a subject that you would like to present at the tournament. Pick something that you know a lot about that you would like to share with others. Maybe you know how to make something that could easily be demonstrated in a few minutes. It is easy to do a presentation when you know your subject well! Read the following article about having a mini public speaking clinic at one of your club meetings! Also see the article about the Regional Public Speaking Tournament in Orono. Any member who competes at the county-level competition can also participate in the regional one on March 23. For information, call 832-0343 or email cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Try a Public Speaking Mini-Clinic at Your Club Meeting

Public Speaking is a very important part of 4-H and a valuable life skill for youth and adults. Speaking in front of other people can be an excellent way to show what we know about a subject and teach others about it. Everyone is an expert at something! Through some fun activities, you can learn to organize your thoughts and present a speech or demonstration with confidence. Cindy Rogers and Rita Glaude want to schedule a mini-clinic at one of your club meetings in preparation for the KL Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament in March. Please contact Cindy for more information or to schedule your visit. 832-0434, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Regional Public Speaking Tournament Planned

The 4-H Regional Public Speaking Tournament will be held Saturday, March 23rd at the University of Maine at Orono in the Bangor Room. 4-H Youth ages 9 to 18 who have participated in their county 4-H public speaking tournament are invited to participate.

Registration for the regional tournament must be handled through the youth’s county Extension office. To register youth, county offices should contact Joyce Fortier in the Hancock County Extension Office no later than March 13th at 207-667-8212 or at joyce.fortier@maine.edu. For more information on 4-H public speaking, including guidelines and judging sheets, please visit http://umaine.edu/hancock/programs/hancock-county-4-h/ or contact Lisa Reilich at 207-598-6621 or lisa.reilich@maine.edu.

Check Out the National 4-H History Preservation Web Page

The 4-H History Preservation website is reaching an ever-expanding audience, sharing information about the history of 4-H. During the past 16 months the site has had over 20 thousand U.S. visitors representing every state. Internationally, visitors from 104 nations have been on the site. Over 400 other websites have linked to the 4-H history website. Check it out, and maybe add your 4-H story! http://4-hhistorypreservation.com/

Penny Challenge Has Been Issued!

KLLA has issued a challenge to clubs: collect pennies throughout the year, deposit them in a designated jar at your club meetings. Bring the jar to the 2013 Achievement Celebration in October for counting. The club that collects the most pennies will be recognized (details to come!). Your contributions will help fund county-wide events and programs that you enjoy all year. Keep us updated with your totals so we can post everyone’s progress!

Teen Night Cancelled

It seems that there is not much excitement around a Teen Night, so we have decided to cancel it. If any teens have an idea about something you would like to do as a teen-only event, please contact Cindy, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 832-0343.

Apply Now for National Trips

National 4-H Trips are excellent opportunities to meet 4-H members from across the nation. Participants learn about many career options, and learn through educational workshops at Congress or become a part of a team making recommendations to National 4-H Council at Conference. To learn more about these trips, visit: http://umaine.edu/4h/home/national-4-h-trips/.

Any Maine 4-H Youth, ages 14 to 18, is eligible to apply. Applicants must be current Maine 4-H members both at the time of application and the time of the actual trip. Application packets must be sent to your county office and postmarked by March 15, 2013.  If you have any questions, please contact Heidi Thuotte at 1-800-287-1535 or heidi.thuotte@maine.edu.

Dates Announced for 4-H@UMaine

4-H@UMaine will be held May 17 & 18, 2013. Ask someone who has been, this is a FUN weekend and a fantastic opportunity to experience a little bit of college life. If you or your child are between the ages of 12 and 18, save the date and check here in coming months for more details!

4-H Farm-to-Fair Key Volunteers Needed

In order to continue the success of this exhibit at Union Fair, two key volunteer roles will need to be filled as soon as possible. A Volunteer Coordinator is needed to seek out and organize the schedule of volunteers operating the exhibit for the 8 days that the fair is open (August 17-24, 2013). The person, or team of two, needs to commit to being available for all of these days. If there is a team of two, the times can be shared.

We also seek a Farm Store Coordinator, who will coordinate the products that kids will choose from to take home after they have been through the exhibit. This person will be responsible for procuring enough donations of locally-produced items to fill the store shelves every day the exhibit is open. This will be done prior to fair week, so your presence will not be needed during the fair.

If you can help or want to learn more, contact Cindy Rogers , 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Next KLLA Meeting in Waldoboro

The next meeting of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association will be held on February 25 at 6pm at the Knox-Lincoln Extension office. Leaders: if you would like to host a meeting in 2013, please notify Cindy Rogers 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Club Visits

In the coming year, 4-H Community Education Assistant Cindy Rogers plans to visit clubs in Knox and Lincoln Counties to get to know the members and see what clubs are doing! If you would like to have Cindy visit one of your club meetings or events, contact her at cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 832-0343.

4-H Farm-to-Fair Key Volunteers Needed

Did you get to visit the 4-H Farm-to-Fair interactive exhibit at the 2012 Union Fair? The Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association reports that the response from the public was resoundingly positive! Local families and folks visiting the area from other states (and countries) praised the exhibit for being fun and informative, a great way to teach kids about how the food they eat and products they use are produced.

Through some fun activities, you can learn to organize your thoughts and present a speech or demonstration with confidence. Cindy Rogers and Rita Glaude want to schedule a mini-clinic at one of your club meetings, preferably in January or February, in preparation for the KL Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament in March. Please contact Cindy for more information or to schedule your visit. 832-0434, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

If you can help or want to learn more, contact Cindy Rogers, 4-H Program Aide, Knox and Lincoln Counties, 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Next KLLA Meeting in Union

The next meeting of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association will be held on December 17 at 6pm at the Union Town Office. Leaders: if you would like to host a meeting in 2013, please notify Cindy Rogers 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Club Visits

In the coming year, 4-H Program Aide Cindy Rogers plans to visit clubs in Knox and Lincoln Counties to get to know the members and see what clubs are doing! If you would like to have Cindy visit one of your club meetings or events, contact her at cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 832-0343.

A special thanks to all of the cooks who contributed to that delicious dinner!

The evening ended with a graduation ceremony for four attending members graduating from Cloverbud to full-fledged 4-H Member status: Arianna C., Reanna H., Josie H. and Hugo S.. We also honored one 18-year-old member who has completed her final year as a 4-H member: Erin R.

Congratulations to all! Check out the Knox Lincoln 4-H Facebook page for photos!

About Club and Officer Awards

At the Achievement Awards Banquet, you saw 4-H members and clubs receive special awards for their record keeping, community service projects and achievement of goals. You may be unclear as to how those awards are earned. Although we realize that many members and clubs in Knox and Lincoln Counties qualify for these awards through the work that they do throughout the year, the Leaders’ Association and Extension staff can only give these awards based on information and nominations submitted by club leaders. This is something we would like to see more of from you.

Club Standards Records are included in your club’s enrollment packet. This is so that your club can set goals for the coming year. In order for your club to be considered a Gold Seal or Blue Ribbon Club in the 2012/2013 4-H year, these forms must be completed by the club leader and submitted to this office by September 30.

Nominations for awards such as Secretary, Treasurer, Leadership, Team Player, Citizenship, Community Service and the Katherine Watier Green Award (for a member or club’s commitment to the environment) are also to be submitted by leaders on an Awards Nomination form which is sent out toward the end of the 4-H year. We encourage leaders to submit the nominations so that members and clubs who deserve the recognition will be considered for these awards. Also keep in mind that nominations for Secretary and Treasurer require the submission of records that the member kept throughout the year at club meetings. These submissions are also due by September 30.

Why not make is a club goal to earn these awards!

4-H Photography Contest Winners!

At the Achievement Awards Banquet, the winners of the KL 4-H Photography Calendar Contest were announced. They are: Aspen D. (3 photos), Lyla C., Zoe G., Nicole J., Hanna B., Eve C. and Colby R. (4 photos). Congratulations to all of you! Winning photos will be featured each month as the cover of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Facebook page! They will also be displayed for the coming year as the new 4-H Gallery, located in the front hall of the KL UMaine Cooperative Extension office. Come see them!

Can you host a KLLA meeting?

In an effort to include more of our 4-H leaders at meetings of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association, meeting locations will move each month to different “host sites”. Leaders: if you would like to host a meeting at some point from November 2012 through April 2013, please notify Cindy Rogers 832-0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu. The meeting dates needing locations are December 17, January 28, February 25, March 25, April 29.

For a complete list of hunting season dates in Maine, go to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Hunting webpage, http://www.maine.gov/ifw/hunting_trapping/index.htm.

Knox-Lincoln 4-H at 2012 Union Fair

Knox-Lincoln 4-H put on a GREAT show at this year’s Union Fair. Here are some of the stats:

Over 30 Knox-Lincoln Adult Volunteers spent many hours supporting local and state 4-H members, including at livestock shows, in the Exhibition Yurt and the new 4-H Farm to Fair interactive exhibit.

61 4-Hers from three counties entered over 350 exhibits in the 4-H Exhibition Yurt.

78 4-Hers from all over the state of Maine entered 4-H Livestock shows.

8 Cloverbuds participated in the Cloverbud Demonstration Show.

Many compliments were paid pertaining to the high quality of 4-H involvement at the fair.

Effective and positive communication and cooperation between the Union Fair Board and 4-H was exhibited.

4-H youths and volunteers demonstrated positive public relations skills with the general public.

4 Club Exhibits represented 179 Knox-Lincoln 4-H members!

Club Exhibits

Four clubs from Knox and Lincoln Counties submitted Club Exhibits for judging this year: Muddy Mustangs, Jolly Juniors, Jolly Farmers and Morris Farm 4-H. All of the clubs scored high in the judging and the scores were close! The top three clubs that will each receive a $35 premium are the Jolly Farmers, Jolly Juniors and Morris Farm 4-H. Congratulations to all and thank you all for participating!

And the Winner Is…

KL clubs and volunteers collected a total of 13 raffle prizes for the 2012 Knox-Lincoln Leader’s Association Raffle at Union Fair. The raffle brought in about $200 for 4-H in Knox and Lincoln Counties. The club who won the KLLA Raffle challenge for the highest dollar value of prizes collected is Alan-Dee Dairy 4-H. Their contribution of 12 Aquaboggin passes is valued at $240! The club will be rewarded with an ice cream social, provided by KLLA, ice cream donated by Round Top Ice Cream in Damariscotta. Thank you to everyone who procured prizes and/or sold and bought raffle tickets!

Who Got Gnomed?

We were thrilled at the response to the challenge for each club to create a duct tape 4-H Garden Gnome! Eight gnomes wandered the fairgrounds during Union Fair. Did you see them? 4-H members and volunteers took turns moving the gnomes to different locations throughout the week, including the Poultry Barn, Farm to Fair, Maine Hall, Wine Pavillion, Restaurant and Blueberry Acres. Their visits surprised some recipients, but were well received once they realized what it meant to be “gnomed” for the day! The question is, what will KL 4-H Clubs follow up with for Union Fair 2013? Send in your ideas!
