Help get the Fairgrounds ready for Union Fair 2013! If you can, bring rakes, shovels and cleaning supplies, although some will be available. A picnic dinner will be provided! Learn up-to-date Union Fair information. Monday, August 12 from 4-7pm.
Each Knox-Lincoln 4-H member who is participating (showing or volunteering) at Union Fair is entitled to free entry to the fair on the days they are participating. In addition, one parent in each participating 4-H family may also receive a free pass so that they can accompany their child on those days. So that you receive the pass that you need, call or email this office by August 12 to let us know what days you will be showing and/or volunteering at the fair (email@example.com, 207.832.0343). Fair passes will be distributed at the Fairgrounds Clean-up Party on August 12. After that date, you may pick up passes at the KL Extension office, or at the yurt when you bring in your project entries on Thursday, August 15, 5-8pm, or Friday, August 16, 3-7pm.
In order to provide secure coverage of the Exhibition Yurt, volunteers are needed to take 2-hour shifts. Also needed are volunteers to take a 4-hour shift at 4-H Farm-to-Fair. You will receive a fair pass for the days that you volunteer. Help us show the public how great our 4-H members and volunteers are! To put your name on the schedule, please call Pam Doherty at the KL Extension office at 207.832.0342, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
We are requesting donations of muffins, fruit and other breakfast foods to offer to our volunteer Exhibition Yurt judges on Saturday morning, August 17. If you can help, contact Cindy Rogers 207.832.0343, email@example.com.
This year’s fundraiser raffle at Union Fair to benefit Knox-Lincoln 4-H will feature themed baskets filled with quality items donated or made by KL 4-H clubs. We have had a wonderful response from clubs and are looking forward to seeing those baskets come in! We ask that these items be new and high-quality or handmade by 4-H club members, with a total basket value of at least $50. Please bring your filled basket to the Cooperative Extension office by August 9.
Pre-sell raffle tickets! 4-H members and leaders are encouraged to sell raffle tickets before the fair. Tickets will be available at the KL Extension Office after July 30. Let’s raise some funds for KL 4-H!
Independent members: please contribute to a Gardening Basket, which will be located at the Knox-Lincoln UMaine Extension office by August 9.
Get your entries ready for the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Photography Contest 2013! Be sure to look back at photos you took in the winter and fall so that we have a variety of seasons and subjects represented.
Any Knox-Lincoln 4-H member 4-H age 9 and up who brings one or more single photographs (not photo stories/collages) to be entered into the Exhibition Yurt at Union Fair will be asked if they wish to also be entered into the photography contest. Entries (whether entered in Union Fair or not) will be accepted at the KL Extension office in Waldoboro until September 30, 2013. For more information contact Cindy Rogers at 207.832.0342 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Plan a club exhibit at Union Fair to show the public and other clubs what you have been doing this year! Following are some tips and guidelines to get you started. Reserve your club’s exhibit space by calling the Extension office by August 2. Judging will be on the Danish System, based on the following criteria:
1. Club/group name with town displayed prominently.
2. Exhibit theme (theme is chosen by the club): Does exhibit express a central idea and carry it out?
3. Exhibit title: creative, prominently placed with large lettering.
4. Lettering (quality and size), color and arrangement
5. 4-H scrapbook: may include photos of 4-H activities, club, goals, community service projects, 4-H family outings and each member should write/draw a life skill that they have learned in 4-H.
6. Size of articles on display: Are they large enough to be recognizable at a distance of six feet?
7. Degree to which the group exhibit involves the public (hands–on). Examples might be: small-scale maze, a game, a mystery box, a card game.
8. NEW this year: Earn a special ribbon at Union Fair 2013 for your club exhibit or individual exhibit following a “Theme of 100”. This can be specifically 100 years of 4-H or 100 of anything!
The top three clubs will receive $35 premiums. Other participating clubs will receive $10 premiums. There will also be a People’s Choice ribbon awarded, as elected by the public.
Contact this office for information (including size restrictions) and to reserve your club exhibit space, 207.832.0343, email@example.com. Spaces will be available for Knox-Lincoln 4-H clubs on a first-come first-serve basis. Call early if electrical outlet is needed.
Cloverbud members (4-H members aged 5-8 years) may participate in a non-competitive demonstration show during Union Fair. Cloverbuds may demonstrate one small animal (rabbit, dog, poultry, kid goat or non-market, lamb, piglet, or small calf) in this show with one-on-one supervision by an adult or older teen with at least three years experience maintaining primary control of the animal. Older 4-H members or adults will interview the younger children while they are demonstrating. Maybe you have a non-animal demonstration you would like to present. These are encouraged as well. All animal and non-animal demonstrations must be approved by 4-H staff prior to the fair. Sign up to participate by August 6. Animal demonstration participants must follow the same rules as apply to competitive livestock shows. Members who participate in a Cloverbud demonstration will receive a participant ribbon along with a $5.00 honorarium.
Remember that 2013 marks 100 Years of 4-H in Maine. Earn a special ribbon at Union Fair 2013 for your club exhibit or individual exhibit following a “Theme of 100”. This can be specifically 100 years of 4-H or 100 of anything! Use your imaginations and make plans! Fair information books and entry forms for club and individual exhibits will be available soon.
During the Union Fair, a few outstanding 4-Hers may be chosen to receive the 4-H Character Award. This honor may be awarded to a 4-Her who carries out his or her project and who treats other 4-H members, fair colleagues, spectators and their animals (when applicable) according to the six pillars of character:
Responsibility, Trustworthiness, Respect, Caring, Fairness and Citizenship.
Nominations for the 4-H Character Award, may be submitted to Knox-Lincoln Extension Office, 377 Manktown Road, Waldoboro, ME 04572 or firstname.lastname@example.org. Nomination cards will also be available at the Union Fair. Look for the 4-H Character Award Display in the 4-H Exhibition Yurt. All 2012-13 nominations must be received by September 30, 2013.
