Public Speaking Workshop a Success

The Public Speaking Workshop held on Saturday, January 25 was attended by few, but those who did attend reported that it was very helpful and enjoyable. 4-H volunteer Linda Bonin and Community Education Assistant Cindy Rogers lead this workshop to help 4-H members of all ages hone their skills and prepare them for any public speaking opportunity that may arise, including the upcoming KL 4-H Public Speaking Tournament on March 9. Examples of posters were displayed and discussed, video clips from past tournaments were shown, and lots of hand-on activities were tried. At the end of the day participants paired up to create and present a quick demonstration…and did very well! We got great feedback from participating youth and parents. We hope to offer this to a larger audience next year. Plan to come!

Public Speaking Tournament March 9

Hold the date for the Knox-Lincoln Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament on Sunday, March 9, 1-4pm (snow date March 16). This year’s event will be held at Jefferson Village School. This will allow us space to split the presentations between two rooms, making the event shorter and more comfortable for everyone.

Sign up to participate by February 24. The registration form, helpful tips and judging criteria are online at http://umaine.edu/knox-lincoln/blog/2014/02/04/2014-kl-4-h-public-speaking-tournament-registration-and-info/. Be thinking about a subject that you would like to present at the tournament. Pick something that you know a lot about that you would like to share with others. Maybe you know how to make something that could easily be demonstrated in a few minutes. It is easy to do a presentation when you know your subject well! Call Cindy Rogers for more information 832-0343 or email cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Sign up for Winter Fun Day!

Plan to attend Winter Fun Day on February 19 at Barley Joe Farm and Greenhouse on Route 90 in Warren. Bring your cross country skis or snow shoes to go on a snow hike. (We have a limited number of youth snow shoes available to borrow; reserve these when you pre-register.) Inside the greenhouse, try out some cool science experiments! Learn about GIS and mapping with Maps & Apps, do some fruit science, make a boomerang or an airfoil! Bring your lunch and taste some grilled veggies too. Pre-register by February 14, call 832-0343, email pamela.doherty@maine.edu.

Early Sign-ups for Union Fair Club Exhibits

Although Union Fair is months away, it is time to plan your Club Exhibit! KL 4-H has been offered space in the Beattie Exhibition Hall (Craft Barn), near the poultry barn at Union Fair. We think this is an excellent location for our club exhibits! In order to make this work well for the hall, as well as give clubs time to plan and create an wonderful exhibit, we are asking clubs and groups of independents to sign up now for their spot. The sign-up deadline is March 28. Call or email 207.832.0343, pamela.doherty@maine.edu.

Club Exhibit theme for 2014 is History. Remember to make your exhibit interactive with the public, display your club name and town prominently, and have a club scrapbook of your activities for the year in display. New this year: Independents can exhibit too! A group or 2 or more independent members can create a club exhibit together. Guidelines for Club Exhibits and Independent Exhibits will be posted in early March. In the meantime, reserve your space!

Apply Now for National Trips

National 4-H Trips are excellent opportunities for 4-H youth age 14-18 to meet 4-H members from across the nation. Participants learn about many career options, and learn through educational workshops at 4-H National Congress or become a part of a team making recommendations to National 4-H Council at 4-H National Conference. To learn more: http://umaine.edu/4h/home/national-4-h-trips/.

Citizenship Washington Focus is a leadership program conducted by the National 4-H Council for high school youth ages 15 to 19. Delegations of 4-Hers from across the country spend six days touring the city and attending leadership skill-building workshops. This summer, the Maine delegation will travel on June 28 to July 5, 2014. To learn more: http://umaine.edu/4h/youth/4-h-events/citizenship-washington-focus/

Applicants must be current Maine 4-H members both at the time of application and the time of the actual trip. Application packets for any of these trips are due in early March. Visit the links above for details. If you have any questions, please contact this office 207.832.0343.

Time to File E-postcard

NEW FILING DATE: FEB. 15. If your club raises funds and has an EIN (Employer ID Number) on file with the IRS, it is time to file the E-990 e-postcard online. It is very important that all clubs with EINs file by February 15, 2014. Once you have filed successfully, please print and send a copy of your confirmation to our office. If you have further questions regarding this filing requirement, feel free to contact Cindy Rogers: 832.0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Leaders: RSVP for 4-H Science Night!

4-H Leaders and Junior Leaders: join us for Science Night on February 24 at 5:30-pm at the KL Extension office. This will be a ½ hour, hands-on science training lead via teleconference by Jennifer Lobley, UMaine Extension Educator for Volunteer Development. You will receive a kit to take with you and try the activity with your club! Plan to arrive a few minutes before 5:30 so we can start on time. The regular meeting of KLLA will follow the training at 6:00pm. Please RSVP cynthia.rogers@maine.edu for this training by February 21.

Start Your Project Records Now

It is winter. What better time than now to start thinking about 4-H projects for the coming year? You will have a much neater, more accurate record if you start now, not at the last minute! Does your club want help getting started with Project Records? If you would like to have Cindy visit one of your club meetings to help, or if you just want to ask a question, contact her at cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 207.832.0343.

4-H Accident Insurance Payments Requested

The Knox-Lincoln Leaders’ Association has voted to pay the cost of accident insurance in 2014 for all enrolled Knox-Lincoln 4-H members and leaders, covering them at 4-H events and meeting activities for the year. We are asking clubs and individual members who are able to reimburse the cost of this insurance (which is $1 per member or leader, $2 for each horse project member or leader) back to KLLA. We thank you for your assistance.

Dates Announced for 4-H@UMaine

Hold the date: 4-H@UMaine will be held May 16 & 17, 2014. Ask someone who has attended, this is a FUN weekend and a fantastic opportunity to experience a little bit of college life. If you are between the ages of 12 and 18, save the date and check here in coming months for more details!

Do You Have News? Send It Here!

We have noticed that clubs and members no longer send us news about what they or their clubs are doing in 4-H. We really want to hear from you! A great way to do this is to choose a club reporter who regularly writes a short paragraph; just a sentence or two is fine, about what the club did at their meeting. We welcome your photos, artwork and creative writing as well. We can publish those here or on our Facebook page. Send news items to Cindy: cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.
