Get Ready for Public Speaking Workshop

There will be a Public Speaking Workshop and potluck lunch on Saturday, January 25 from 10am-1pm at Knox-Lincoln UMaine Extension. Come try some fun activities that will get you ready to participate in the Knox-Lincoln Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament on March 9 (details and registration materials will be available in February). This workshop is open to all ages and levels of public speaking experience. If you have competed in the tournament before and want to hone you skills, or if this will be the first time you have tried public speaking, this workshop is for you! Bring a dish to share for a potluck lunch following the workshop. Register for this workshop by January 20. For information, call 832-0343 or email cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Leaders: Join Us for Science Night!

Due to low attendance, the December, 2013 meeting of KLLA was cancelled. Science Night has been rescheduled for January. KL Leaders and Junior Leaders, plan to attend a hands-on science training at 5:30pm on January 27, just before our regular KLLA meeting. This will take place at the KL UMaine Extension office and will be lead via teleconference by Jennifer Lobley, UMaine Extension Educator for Volunteer Development. You will receive a kit to take with you and try the activity with your club! Plan to arrive a few minutes before 5:30 so we can start on time. See you there!

Snow Tubing at a New Location

The KL Leaders Association has decided to try a different park for our annual Snow Tubing event. Go Maine (Gotubingmaine.com) in South China is a much larger park than we have used in the past, and features a tow line to get back to the top. We will have a 2 1/2-hour sliding time and cost will be $7 per person. A parent or leader must accompany children for this event, and any child under 42 inches in height or 5 years of age must ride with an adult. Tentatively, we are planning this event for February 7, 6-8:30pm. More details to come! Call 832-0343, email pamela.doherty@maine.edu to register by February 3.

Winter Fun Day Planned for February 19

Plan to attend this fun event on February 19 at Barley Joe Farm and Greenhouse on Route 90 in Warren. Bring your cross country skis or snow shoes to go on a snow hike. (We have a limited number of youth snow shoes available to borrow; reserve these when you pre-register.) Inside the greenhouse, try out some cool science experiments! Bring your lunch and taste some grilled veggies too. Pre-register by February 14, call 832-0343, email pamela.doherty@maine.edu.

Tractor Supply in Knox County

There is a new Tractor Supply store in Thomaston. What does that mean to Knox-Lincoln 4-H? It means fundraising opportunities for our clubs. Tractor Supply Company helps raise money for county 4-H programs with the Paper Clover Campaign, a national in-store fundraiser that benefits state and local 4-H programming. For the first time, Knox and Lincoln counties can participate in the Paper Clover Campaign at Tractor Supply. Also, Ed Marisnick, manager of the Thomaston store, is open to fundraising events clubs may want to hold at that store.

Here are some ideas from the Tractor Supply website on getting involved with your local store:

  • Hold fundraisers at your local TSC during holidays!
    • Valentine’s Day: Sell Valentine’s Day cards made by 4-H members
    • July 4th: Sell hot dogs and hamburgers
    • Fall: Carve pumpkins to sell
    • Winter Holidays: Set up a gift wrapping table
  • Set up educational livestock clinics in the parking lot of your local TSC store.
  • Ask your store about using your local TSC as a potential meeting site, field trip, or exhibition location.

Check with the store manager to begin planning your next fundraiser! You can use the form in the Fundraising section of the Tractor Supply website to initiate a relationship with your local TSC store. http://www.tractorsupply.com/content_landing-page_4H.html

Start Your Project Records Now

It is winter. What better time than now to start thinking about 4-H projects for the coming year? You will have a much neater, more accurate record if you start now, not at the last minute! Does your club want help getting started with Project Records? If you would like to have Cindy visit one of your club meetings to help, or if you just want to ask a question, contact her at cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, 207.832.0343.

Time to File E-postcard

NEW FILING DATE: FEB. 15. If your club raises funds and has an EIN (Employer ID Number) on file with the IRS, it is time to file the E-990 e-postcard online. It is very important that all clubs with EINs file by February 15, 2014. Once you have filed successfully, please print and send a copy of your confirmation to our office. If you have further questions regarding this filing requirement, feel free to contact Cindy Rogers: 832.0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Dates Announced for 4-H@UMaine

Hold the date: 4-H@UMaine will be held May 16 & 17, 2014. Ask someone who has been, this is a FUN weekend and a fantastic opportunity to experience a little bit of college life. If you or your child are between the ages of 12 and 18, save the date and check here in coming months for more details!

Do You Have News? Send It Here!

We have noticed that clubs and members no longer send us news about what they or their clubs are doing in 4-H. We really want to hear from you! A great way to do this is to choose a club reporter who regularly writes a short paragraph; just a sentence or two is fine, about what the club did at their meeting. We welcome your photos, artwork and creative writing as well. We can publish those here or on our Facebook page. Send news items to Cindy: cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.
