4-H Member Receives Principal’s Award

Madeleine B. of the Lucky Shepherds, a senior at Medomak Valley High School (MVHS), was recently selected to receive the 2012 Principal’s Award. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals Association, is given in recognition of a senior’s academic achievement and citizenship. Madeleine, along with MVHS Principal Harold Wilson, will attend an honors luncheon in Bangor on April 7. She and other recipients will be awarded a plaque and lapel pin in recognition of his/her achievement. Five students, chosen by lottery from a pool of names of those students present at the luncheon, will be awarded $1,000 scholarships. Madeleine, expected to graduate magna cum laude in June, served as president of the National Honor Society at MVHS. She is also co-founder of the school’s recycling club, a member of the math and cross-country teams, as well as an officer in the Lucky Shepherds 4-H Club. Congratulations Madeleine!

4-H Volunteers Needed in Warren

The Nature Club at Warren Community School is a group of kids that goes on hikes, plants and harvests gardens, does nature crafts and other fun stuff! This group is in need of a few Volunteer Orientation and Leadership Training (VOLT) certified volunteers to help their club. Specifically needed are meeting helpers (the club meets each Monday during the school year, 3:10 p.m. – 4:40 p.m.) volunteers willing to transport children on field trips (about once a month), and someone willing to manage the club bank account (VERY light accounting-balancing statements, tracking fundraising, etc.). If you can help or know someone who can, contact Cindy Rogers at 832.0343, or cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.

Space Limited at Photography Workshop

We are once again offering a Photography Workshop for 4-H members on Saturday, April 14, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at the Knox-Lincoln Cooperative Extension office. Come learn more about your camera and how to take better pictures. In the session “Mystery Subject,” 4-H leader and art teacher Laura Freeman will help us explore the elements of an interesting image without getting hung up on the subject. Professional Photographer Kim Miller will help us take better portraits in several light conditions in “Photographing People.” One session on “Stop Motion Animation” will be lead by members of the PhotoGraphic Chickens 4-H club. This workshop is limited to 20 participants, so pre-register by Monday, April 9. Bring a lunch, snacks provided. Parents are welcome to stay too. Call or email 832.0343, pamela.doherty@maine.edu.

Barnyard Bash Presenters/Volunteers Wanted

The Knox-Lincoln Leaders’ Association (KLLA) will once again present Barnyard Bash at Union Fairgrounds June 8-9, 2012. We already have some great workshops and activities lined up for this overnight event! If you would like to lead an activity, craft or other workshop, or if you would just like to help out, contact Cindy Rogers at 832.0343, cynthia.rogers@maine.edu, or Sandie Foster at 845.2615, lucestable@fairpoint.net. All workshops must be confirmed by April 27, so contact us now!

4-H Accident Insurance Payments Requested

The KLLA has voted to pay the cost of accident insurance in 2012 for all enrolled Knox-Lincoln 4-H members and leaders, covering them at 4-H events and meeting activities for the year. We are asking clubs and individual members who are able to reimburse the cost of this insurance (which is $1 per member, $2 for each horse project member or leader) back to KLLA. We thank you for your assistance.

Consider Participating in Global Youth Service Day

Knox-Lincoln 4-H wants to encourage youth in our counties to participate in Global Youth Service Day by volunteering to clean up garden beds or perform other needed tasks at nearby community gardens and school gardens. Then tell us about it!

Earth Day, April 22, 2012, marks the 24th year of Global Youth Service Day. This event (April 20-22, 2012) is celebrated in more than 100 countries, and recognizes the positive impact that young people have on their communities 365 days a year. Organized by Youth Service America (YSA), a leader in the international youth service movement, Global Youth Service Day offers youth, ages 5 to 25, the resources and support to plan meaningful projects that improve their communities. Learn more at http://gysd.org/.

KLLA Meeting to Be Held at Morris Farm

The April 30 meeting of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association will be hosted by the Morris Farm 4-H Club leaders at the Morris Farm in Wiscasset at 6:00 p.m. Watch your email or contact this office for directions and information.
