Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service
Fifty-two people attended a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service community potluck presented by 4-H, FoodCorps, and the University of Maine Cooperative Extension at Sheepscot General at Uncas Farms in Whitefield. Aldermere Achievers 4-H club members did an excellent job speaking about their trip to Kentucky for the National Belted Galloway Show. What a trip! Their leader Heidi Baker told us about the Farm-to-Fair project proposed for Union Fair 2012. $50 was raised through a penny drive to benefit the Good Shepherd Food Bank. Thank you to everyone who organized, presented, attended or contributed a dish or pennies to this wonderful event.
Winter Fun Fair Planned for February 22
Plan to attend this fun event on February 22, 10am-2pm at Barley Joe Farm and Greenhouse on Route 90 in Warren. Bring your cross country skis or snow shoes to go on a hike and learn about orienteering with a compass or gps. (We have a limited number of youth snow shoes available to borrow; reserve these when you pre-register.) We will also do some planting of seeds for spring! Grilled veggie lunch will be provided and mini workshop on how to give a demonstration or illustrated talk. Pre-register by February 17, call 832-0343, email pamela.doherty@maine.edu.
Get Ready for Public Speaking
Hold the date for the Knox-Lincoln Public Speaking and Demonstration Tournament on Sunday, March 11, 1-4pm (snow date March 18). The location of this event has not been finalized, but we will keep you posted! In the mean time, be thinking about a subject that you would like to present at the tournament. Pick something that you know a lot about that you would like to share with others. Maybe you know how to make something that could easily be demonstrated in a few minutes. It is easy to do a presentation when you know your subject well! We plan to hold a mini public speaking workshop during the Winter Fun Fair on February 22 to help you get started. We have information at this office with helpful tips as well. Call 832-0343 or email cynthia.rogers@maine.edu.
Sleigh Rally in Windsor
The 12th annual Windsor Historical Society Sleigh Rally will be held on Sunday, February 12 at the Windsor Fairgrounds from 10:00am to 2:00pm. Admission is $5.00 per person, children 5 years old and under are free. There will be hot dogs and other tasty things to eat for sale. The Blacksmith Shop will be open. If there is no snow we will offer wagon rides instead of the sleighs.
KLLA Meeting To Be Held in Windsor
The February 27 meeting of the Knox-Lincoln 4-H Leaders’ Association, hosted by Darlene Newcombe, will be held at 6pm at the Windsor Historical Society at Windsor Fairgrounds. Watch your email or contact this office for directions and information.
Club Visit with the Muddy Mustangs
I visited the Muddy Mustangs at one of their club meetings in Jefferson in January. Although this horse club does learn to ride horses at some of their meetings, this was what they call an “unmounted” meeting. As a 4-H leader myself, I was curious to see how a club with 41 enrolled members operates; as it turns out, very well! After club business, the group was divided into Cloverbuds and older members. Leader Lynda Pinkham worked on project records with the older group while Rachael Richmond explained to the Cloverbuds the different types of bits used for horses. The kids (and I) learned that there are straight bits and snaffle bits. The snaffle bit is more comfortable for the horse because it bends in the middle over the tongue.
The groups switched places, then got back together to create posters about the various bits. What a great prop those posters would be for an illustrated talk at the Public Speaking Tournament on March 11! Another leader of the Muddy Mustangs is Cindy Allen. You all are doing a great job. –Cindy Rogers
Club Visit with the WCS Nature Club
The Warren Community School Nature Club is lead by Kathy Cartwright. Last week the club met at Medomak Valley High School. Part of the group donned snowshoes and hiked the nature trail behind the school. Many discoveries were made, including a hawk, evidence of deer and squirrels, lovely yellow birches and a big red oak tree. After the hike, the kids met in the greenhouse with Neil Lash. Mr. Lash teaches horticulture at the high school and operates the Heirloom Seed Project there. He showed the kids techniques for saving seeds to use in the next growing season. He also let us see his experiment in growing lettuce hydroponically, or without soil. It looks like his lettuce is well on its way to providing the school cafeteria with some fresh greens in a few months.
