Aldermere Achievers national champions!
Congratulations to Heidi Baker, 4-H leader and her amazing Aldermere Achievers 4-H club members for their incredible efforts at the National Belted Galloway Society’s National Youth Show in Louisville, Kentucky last month. Three of the top four awards were given to Aldermere Achievers members! For more details, please see this article: http://www.mcht.org/news/2011/11/aldermere_achievers_shine.shtml. They are truly a shining example of “making the best better”!
A member’s experience in her own words…
My experience in Kentucky was unimaginable. Between going to the city and the show ring, I had a great time. My 4-H members and I cleaned house in the beltie youth group shows, also the adults did a wonderful job showing our cows in the open show.
My city group went to Churchill Downs. We also went to the Louisville Zoo and the candy store. We toured the candy store and watched them make homemade “Red Hots” for which the old fashioned candy store is famous.
At the Zoo we saw many different types of animals. My personal favorites were the zebras. Are they black with white stripes, or white with black stripes? No one knows; that’s what makes them my favorites.
My little calf, Yemmi, was different from all the rest of the Aldermere Cattle. She is still a Belted Galloway, but Yemmi is a dun calf. That means that somewhere in her bloodline she has a relative that is a dun cow. Not just any cow can come out dun colored, which is brown or gray. They need the bloodline in order to be dun. There is a 1 in 4 chance that it will come out dun.
Yemmi and I won her breed class right off the bat, her first show ever. She got a big blue rosette! Then we went in for the showmanship class. That is based on you yourself, and how you handle your cow. We took second place! The next day Matt Thurston, who came along with us to clip our cow for us, took her in the open show. He took second place with my beautiful heifer!
This doesn’t even begin to sum up the whole trip! I loved Louisville, Kentucky! I would enjoy going back again! Thanks so much Heidi Baker, Ron Howard, Jake Baker, and also all parents who had a part in this journey! We all enjoyed it!

PhotoGraphic Chickens
At the second meeting of the year for the PhotoGraphic Chickens welcomed several new members and discussed what we would be doing this year. We were informed that the club is about photography and stop animation. Next, we played a game in which we had a sticky note on our back that read if we were a 4-H event, animal, or building; then we asked questions to the other members of the club, and guessed what was written on our sticky notes that we had on our backs. After our game we watched a stop animation movie the club made last year, and a professional stop animation movie in French. Lastly, we enjoyed going outside and taking some pictures of the autumn scenery.
