The proper and effective use of pesticides depends on the sound judgment of trained applicators. To become licensed to apply pesticides in Maine, individuals must first earn certification through examinations that show proficiency in pest management, pesticide use and safety. The Maine Pesticide Safety Education Program provides certification training and educational materials for all private and commercial pesticide applicators in a collaborative effort between University of Maine Cooperative Extension and our Federal and State partners: the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the Maine Board of Pesticides Control (BPC).

How many recertification credits have I earned? If you already have your license and you want to check to see how many recertification credits you have accrued, contact the Board of Pesticides Control ^[1] at 207-287-2731.

Recertification meetings: The Credit Meeting Calendar ^[2], maintained by the Board of Pesticides Control, lists approved recertification opportunities, including University of Maine Cooperative Extension recertification training sessions; online and correspondence courses; national conferences and seminars; training sessions in other New England states; and video training tapes for rent. Record keeping & reporting requirements: Pesticide record keeping and reporting are required of commercial applicators, commercial agricultural producers, limited restricted use pesticide dealers, spray contracting firms and monitors. Applicators must keep records for all of the pesticides they used for a period of two years.
