Study Abroad Programs - Université de Bretagne Occidentale (UBO)

Located in a sheltered position not far from the western tip of the Breton peninsula, Brest is an important seaport and naval base. It is located amidst a dramatic landscape near the entrance of the natural Rade de Brest, at the west end of Brittany. It is a city with many faces that combines economic development and quality of life. Brest has been able to develop and modernize its maritime vocation to become a European capital of science and technology of the sea.  The city is known for its vibrant shops and offers a variety of cultural activities and athletic events, and the downtown area remains a Mecca for nightlife.

Faculty Coordinator

Prof. Jane Smith in the Department of Modern Languages and Classics is the faculty coordinator for this direct exchange program. Students may contact Prof. Smith to learn more about the academic program at UBO.

Academics:

A minimum of two years college-level French study is required. All courses are taught in French. Courses offered in Business: Finance, Law, Management and Accounting, Public Administration, Resource Economics, Transportation Management; Humanities: Archeology, Art History, Breton, French, Gaelic, German, History, Literature, Spanish; Kinesiology & Physical Education; Sciences, Technology & Health: Marine Biology, Mathematics, Oceanography, Natural Sciences; Electronics & Telecommunications, Computer Science, Industrial engineering, Construction Engineering; Social Sciences: Anthropology (Ethnology), Geography, Psychology, Sociology; and Tourism & Leisure Studies.

Housing:

Students apply for housing as part of their UBO application. If students want to live in university housing, they need to provide 2 month’s rent (first month’s rent + security deposit). The price per room is usually about 137.60 Euros per month. Students in France enjoy state-subsidized meals (average price of a meal is about 3 Euros), low housing cost, and discounts on travel and leisure activities.
