Direct Exchange Programs - Edith Cowan University

perthEdith Cowan University (ECU) is located in Perth, Australia. The university is named after Edith Dircksey Cowan, born in 1861, who believed education was the key to growth, change and improvement.  Edith’s contribution to the development of Western Australian education was significant. She strove to achieve social justice and campaigned for the rights of women, children and families, for the poor, the poorly educated and the elderly. It is fitting that the oldest education institution and newest State university, ECU, bears her name.

Australia

The landscapes of the northern part of Australia, with a tropical climate, consist of rainforest, woodland, grassland, mangrove swamps and desert. There is a temperate in the south-east and southwest areas, which allow Australia to remain overall, pretty dry throughout the year. The “Outback” is perhaps best known for its kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and wombats, among many other endemic species of both flora and fauna. Its coastline inhabits the world’s largest coral reef, The Great Barrier Reef, an ideal location for snorkeling and diving. Although Canberra is the capital, Sidney has the greatest population.

australiaAustralia has an active tradition of music, ballet and theater with a symphony orchestra in each capital city. There is boating on the shorelines, and competitive sports such as cricket, hockey, rugby, and soccer all over the country. A common theme in Australian art and literature has been the Australian landscape that began with a long history of visual arts that started with the cave and bark paintings of its indigenous people. Australia offers a wide range of both entertainment and relaxation throughout all parts of their culture.

Perth

The city of Perth is on the west coast of Australia. It is a vibrant, sophisticated city. As well as being a friendly, safe and relaxed city, Perth offers all the cosmopolitan attractions of a large international city. The city boasts hundreds of restaurants and cafes, cinemas, nightclubs, and music venues as well as great shopping! The warm sunny climate is also perfect for sporting and leisure activities – everything from tennis to golf through to whale watching and sailing.

Academics

ECU offers a large selection of units (courses) across many disciplines. Exchange students may choose units in any study area, as long as they meet any prerequisites for the unit. Read this information on how to choose courses and browse ECU’s course catalog called the Handbook. Most students take 3-4 courses at ECU at a total of 60 ECU credit points. Visit the semester online timetable to see if the units will be running in a particular semester.

As the two metropolitan campuses ( Joondalup and Mount Lawley) are located approximately 25 km apart (18 miles), it is preferable to choose units on one campus only. If you would like to enroll in units at both campuses, you should allow about 1.5 hours to travel between the two on public transportation (driving takes about 20 minutes). The South West regional campus at Bunbury, located approximately 180 km south of Perth (120 miles), offers a range of units if you would prefer to study in a smaller campus and town. You also have the option of studying some units online, however, you will need to be enrolled in at least one on-campus unit per semester.

Courses marked “Exchange” (For Students On Exchange) means that these units are for ECU students only who are heading overseas for their exchange. These courses are not open to UMaine students going to ECU. Most courses marked with ‘Joondalup’, ‘Mt Lawley’ or ‘Off’, which is the vast majority of offered courses, are available to UMaine exchange students.

Housing

Campus Living Villages (CLV) manages ECU’s on-campus housing. It offers fully furnished apartments and a vibrant student community, all located minutes from the university. Apartments are fully furnished with private bedrooms, large kitchens and spacious lounge areas. Due to the high demand for on-campus accommodation, exchange students should apply early.

You can also choose to live in a Homestay in a private home with an Australian family. The chance to be involved in the daily life, the learning of our culture and customs plus the added advantage of having the company of other people are just some of the reasons Homestay is popular. These prices may vary depending on individual arrangements. You can request a homestay placement before leaving your country of residence and you will be notified of your family details so that you can go straight to your homestay family from the airport.

Health Insurance

Exchange students are required to arrange Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) before arrival in Australia and to maintain cover throughout their course.

ECU

I learned so much about myself and I have so much more confidence now. Being independent is not a problem and I’m changed for the better.  You  definitely need to have an open and aware mind when traveling.  Village housing was on campus and with 5 other students in the unit. Housing was convenient to train station and a short walk when the buses weren’t running. I know I can go anywhere now and be okay.
