International Student & Scholar Services

The staff of the Office of International Programs (OIP) helps new students and scholars adjust to life in the United States and at the University of Maine. OIP offers a 3 day New Student Orientation at the beginning of each semester, which covers topics such as immigration, campus resources and activities and tips on cultural adjustment. New scholars meet individually with the Student/Scholar Advisor when they arrive to review immigration issues and get information about living in the United States.
The staff is dedicated to helping students and scholars reach their academic and personal goals. In addition to detailed advice on immigration issues, OIP can provide referrals to academic support services on campus including tutoring, English language training, and study skill sessions. Workshops on employment authorization are held on a regular basis. We also provide information on health services, health insurance and taxes.
The OIP sponsors recreational trips throughout the year, and events such as Culturefest (fall) and an International Dance Festival (spring) are high points of the year. Students can join the International Student Association, which organizes a number of social events each semester. OIP encourages students to participate in many other clubs, sports, recreational and volunteer opportunities on campus or in the community as well.
