Established in 1946, the Fulbright program aims to increase mutual understanding between peoples of the United States and other countries. There are over 250 Fulbright programs for faculty, students, professional staff members, teachers, etc. Fulbright offices are in the United States and around the world, providing funding programs for both U.S. citizens to go abroad, and for citizens of other countries who wish to come to America. The Maine Fulbright chapter was inaugurated on June 11, 2007.
Cecil Rhodes left in his will funds to bring outstanding students from many countries to the University of Oxford to aid in the promotion of international understanding and peace. Initiated in 1902, the first American scholars were elected in 1904. American scholars are selected through regional selection committees. Of approximately 80 awards, 32 go to Americans, selected for “excellence in qualities of mind and in qualities of person” which offer promises of lifetime service to the world. The grant covers costs for two years of study at Oxford, including maintenance allowance and travel to and from Oxford. Dr. Mac Hunter, Wildlife Ecology, is UMaine’s representative; 581-2865.
The National Security Education Program offers study abroad scholarships for undergraduates, graduate students and intensive language training. U.S. citizens may study in world regions critical to U.S. interests. Western European countries, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada excluded. Foreign language study is a required component of the program, and there is a required service component upon graduation.
Rotary offers scholarship programs for academic year or two-years of study in another country. There is also a Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship for 3-6 months on intensive language and cultural immersion, as well as specialized scholarships.
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS)
The Association for Women in Science (AWIS) supports career development for women scientists through its Educational Awards Program. Funds to support these Awards derive from the AWIS endowment through targeted donations. The Program was substantially revised recently to focus on assisting early-career women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with professional development.
