Chris Mares, Director, Chris.Mares@umit.maine.edu

Chris has been involved in English Language Teaching since 1981. He has taught ESL/EFL students, trained teachers, written textbooks and other teaching materials, as well as presented at many professional conferences. He has worked and lived in Europe, the Middle East, and the Far East.
Chris has an MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of Reading and also holds a Cambridge Diploma in TEFLA from International House.

Rebecca Rand, Program Coordinator, Rebecca.S.Rand@umit.maine.edu

Rebecca has worked at the UMaine Intensive English Institute since the spring of 2006.  She was born and raised on a farm in Aroostook County, Maine and moved to the greater Bangor area in 1999.  Her work background is in banking and radio sales as well as several offices on the UMaine campus.  Rebecca has helped, admitted, hosted, advised and cared for many international students and loves the opportunities and challenges her position as IEI Program Coordinator provides!

Jim McCarthy, ESL Teacher, James_Mccarthy0@umit.maine.edu

Jim has been an ESL instructor since earning his MA in Linguistics from Ohio University in 1983. He has taught all levels, ages and skills while teaching in Saudi Arabia, The Netherlands, and New Mexico. He has trained teachers in Nicaragua, Tobago, Bulgaria and Ethiopia.

Jim also has an MA in International Relations and a BA in Latin American Studies.

Christina Cheung, ESL Teacher, Christina.Cheung@maine.edu

Christina is from New York City and taught there until moving to Maine in 2012. She has a Masters in TESOL from Teachers College at Columbia University and always strives to instill in her students language learning strategies that promote student autonomy.
