Payroll - Checking Vacation Balances

Checking Your Vacation Balance

Vacation balances can be easily checked online using the MaineStreet system by following these three steps:

1. Log onto MaineStreet

You can access MaineStreet at If you need help with any aspect of accessing the system, please call the IT Help Center (581-2506) who can help you with everything from activating your account if you have not used MaineStreet before to helping you reset a forgotten password.

Once you’re in the system, you need to go to Employee Self-Service:

2. Navigate to the Leave Balances Screen

After you select Employee Self-Service you then need to navigate to the Benefits section. Within in the Benefits menu you will find a choice labeled Leave Balances.

On this screen you can select the type of balance you would like to review. Choose Vacation Balances to continue.

3. View Your Vacation Balance

Your current balance is represented on the line beginning “Hours Balance as of last accrual date”. That indicates your official balance, and any adjustments made at the end of the year for any time you may have over the maximum allowable will be based on this figure.

The next line shows hours you have entered but which have not been approved by your supervisor. Those hours should be approved by the last payroll in December in order to be properly reflected in your balance. For monthly employees, any time taken in December or anticipated to be taken in December should be approved by the 15th of the month. The Show Me link allows you to review the time that has been entered and not approved.

The third line shows how many hours you have available to take subtracting what you have reported from your current balance. Again, it is the first number, not this number that determines vacation cut-offs.

You can review your accruals, as well as how much time uses was deducted from your balance but entering a date in the ‘From Date:’ box and clicking ‘Get Accrual Leave History’. The history shows time when it was applied. So if you took 40 hours in May and your time was approved for the June payroll, those 40 hours will be reflected as taken in the June payroll.

Remember: All time taken in this calendar year must be approved before the final payroll of the year runs. Otherwise your time will not be accurate when the process runs to subtract any time over the contractual maximum.
