Extension Homemaker Council members enjoyed outing with Maine Boating Adventures

September 16th, 2011

The Maine Extension Homemaker Council (MEHC) members and guests from Franklin, Lincoln, Oxford, and Somerset Counties enjoyed an outing with Maine Boating Adventures, cruising in vintage style, aboard the Rendezvous, a World War II Liberty boat, owned by Captain Brenda Thomas and her husband, Captain Brian Thomas of Rockland. Captain Brian piloted the boat around Rockland Harbor, Sheep and Monroe Islands, up past Owls Head Lighthouse to the fishing village of Owls Head, where lobster and fishing boats could be seen. On the return trip, ducks, an osprey with two chicks in a nest, a seal, and the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse were seen.

Barbara Hathaway, MEHC President from Franklin County, organized the outing. Other Franklin County Extension Homemakers attending were Neighborhood Extension Homemakers President Poll Howatt, Roberta Fogg, Chris Cook, and Betty Hill. MEHC Immediate Past MEHC President Jackie Conant, from Oxford County, and Polly Bussiere, President of Oxford County Extension Homemakers, were also on the trip.

A special honor was given to Army Veteran Don Smith, Vietnam hero with medals of Honor. Don is the husband of Jean Smith, Bristol Extension Homemaker member and MEHC Representative, who was on the trip, too. Don was given a red, white, and blue pail filled with cookies and an American flag in appreciation for his dedication to the United States of America and saving of over 100 lives.

There are ten Maine counties with Extension Homemakers groups and the outing was a fun and educational way for Extension Homemakers to fellowship with other members from different counties. 2011 has been a Membership Focus year and all are welcome to join.
