My research specialty is the religious and cultural history of early modern France. I am especially interested in the relationship between religious doctrines, intellectual and cultural shifts, and popular mentalities during the Enlightenment. My current project examines widespread participation in and responses to publicized miracle between the 1690s and the French Revolution. I trace the intellectual, cultural, and social processes by which miracles transformed from symbols of divine grace at the beginning of the century into symbols of human deceit by the French Revolution.
