Description: This course provides graduate students with a general introduction to the current state of early American historical scholarship. By covering the same chronological scope as the traditional first half of the US survey (minus Reconstruction) the knowledge gained in this course can help one become a more effective teacher of a staple course offered at almost all high schools, colleges, and universities in the United States. In addition to attention to content and pedagogy, the course emphasizes introducing students to leading examples of varied methodological approaches to historical research – some readings are established classics, others more recent work that breaks significant new ground. This course can help graduate students develop a broad historiographical understanding of the historical discipline, an essential skill for Ph.D. comprehensive examinations.
